Lumina A/C Problems

Still having a problem with my 98 Lumina A/C System. Bought a can of R-134 to recharge the system. Hooked it up to the low pressure side of the system (The fatter of the 2 lines). Turned the a/c on, put the blower on high, and started the car. My problem is that the system will not accept the freon. I pulled the connector off of the compressor and applied 12 volts to the compressor....the clutch engages...so I am assuming that the compressor is still good. I then ran the car with compressor running and tried to get the freon to go in. Still nothing!!! It just will not come out of the can. The system will not accept it! Any suggestions???

Well I could be the orifice tube filter is clogged...I got the same problem... "the orifice filter in the return line to the condenser (high presusre side) is probably plugged with debris... It's a $3 part, and changing it will probably fix your issue".... I stole this from my forum thread... might be your problem too... Thank RICHTAZZ for the answer... he has been a big help...

yep, your issue is probably the same as Myxlplyxxx's. If you put an A/C guage on the car, while you have the compressor jumpered, you'll probably notice the pressure is too high. That would be an indication of a clogged orifice filter.

Where is the filter located? Does the R-134 leak out when you change the filter? Thanks for the help!!!

The issue here is that debris may be an indication of compressor damage, yes you will loose the 134 when the system is open, it should then be evacuated and checked for holding vacuum before charging, First check the pressure for a proper diagnosis. Just charging the system is not the answer here, as I said a proper diagnosis with the appropriate equipment is in order.

Update!! First off thanks to all for the help and suggestions! I pulled the orifice filter and sure enough there was a pretty good amount of oilly black gunk trapped in the screen. The tube inside the filter was not clogged and I am wondering if there was anough gunk trapped to clog the syustem?? How much R-134 does the system hold? Do I need to add oil the the system when recharging? Is there any way to clean the system before recharging? And finally, where is the junk coming from that is clogging the filter?? Thanks again for all the help.

similiar issue :Air is slightly cold, water drips from outlet tube as it should BUT it is not cold enough and the cool air feels humid not dry as it should be. It cant keep up on a sunny humid day.

tried to put in more 134a , the meter (walmart kit) was just over the blue line
(normal line) but the system did not want to suck any more in (compressor was running).

I heard to things from this site - it could be a air orfice filter clogged

Question - can any one tell me where this filter is located ?


and it could be the mixture duct work which I read may be in the drivers side wheel are?? I can seem to find that - can anyone tell me where that might be?

As mentioned in the earlier post, get the high and low pressure readings first, adding freon can actually reduce the ac's efficiency.

i had both sides checked and they were in th normal range now im thinking that the ducts may not be working (mixing in warm air).??

If this was a problem the pressures would be out of whack, is the line going into evap on the low side cold?

its cool but not real cold On the 1992 and 1993 lumina there is a preasure switch located on the high side of the power steering. When the wheels are cut all the way to the left or right it cuts off the air condition to help reduce the load on the motor. I had mine replaced four years ago and it is bad again. The trouble is i dont know exactly where it is at. The shop that fixed it the last time specialize in Z34 and high peformance cars. I called him yesterday and he said just trace the line and it will be a two prong switch.
