Confused about my venge..

Alright so... lets start off base. I have a 97 Avenger, it' got the 2.5L V6.. but then what i wonder is... did all 97 models use the 16" alloy rims? Because being that my car is an ES model, I thought it would have the 17" stock alloys.

Not sure if this is a stupid question, maybe the owners before me had replaced something... because even my gauge is off by about 13~14 mph... I even brought it in for new tires, still ran off by 13~14 mph, and then we also had it tested to see what it ran at, but the mechanic had only said it was just the gauge... but how could the gauge just suddenly be 13~14 mph off? I'm sure the car didn't come off the lot like that.

All together... 2.5L V6, my gauge is off by 13~14 mph, it's got 16" instead of the 17" tires. Someone get back to me with anything, i'm confused beyond belief, if you want to know anything else that the car has e-mail me at recklessthoughts@gmail.com, or just get to me on the forums.

Thanks

All together i'm mostly confused about my gauge being off by so much... i could care less about what tires are on the car, they'll be gone soon enough... if it doesn't get rough with money. What gets to me is the speedometer being off by so much.

There must be a problem with the speedo. At the most, tire size would only make it off by 5-6 mph at 60mph.
The OEM wheel were 17" with 205/50 17 tires.
For 16" rims the 195/60 16 or 205/60 16 would be the closest in diameter to the original tires.
Another size that would be close is 205/55 16.

Its not the rim size that affects it but the overall tire and wheel diameter that throws off the speedometer. For example if you go with a larger wheel but lower profile tire and maintain near the stock overal diameter it wouldnt effect the gauge. If the gauge is off by that much it sounds like you gauge itself is messed up.

Yea, that's what i'm left at right now. So, do you think I should take it in, or do it all myself? It's about 80 bucks for the guy to only look at it... which seems a bit much just for looking at it. But yea, thanks for the input.

Do it yourself it is really easy. Pull the two screws from the top of the gauge cluster bezel. Put the steering wheel down all the way and you may want to push down wiper and turn signal controls to give you more room to remove the surrounding bezel. Once that is off you will be able to see the screws holding the gauge cluster in. After you remove those just pull the cluster straight out and make sure the connections in back come out okay, be careful with the assembly.
