gas gauge problems

I just bought a 1997 grand prix for 4,000. after i bought it i found out that the gas guage doesnt work. It wont display the correct amount of gas in the tank. DOES ANYONE NOW HOW TO FIX THIS PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!

You most likely have a bad fuel level sending unit and float. It is part of the fuel pump assembly (pod). There is an access cover in the trunk behind the rear passenger's seat whereby you can service the unit. If you need a procedure to DIY the work let me know and I can post it for you.

Mine does the same and I just fill up every 360 miles or so.

When removing the fuel and evaporative emmissions lines off the pod be very careful because the plastic may break due to age and ozone. The level and float sensor can be changed separately without replacing the complete pod and fuel pump assembly. Sometimes using electrical contact cleaner on the wound wires elements of the resistor may work and you will be able to salvage it. Resistance can be checked with a multimeter for value and linearity. Good luck!
