Hey Guys,
Just bought a '94 Sunfire 4-cyl, FI, hoping to fix it for my daughter's car. It leaks anti-freeze from the front at or around head gasket, blows stinky anti-freeze steam at the exhaust, runs rough, has water in the oil, and has two exhaust manifold bolts broken-off and missing indicating the head has been off before.
Tell me some good news.....I'll be going by Advance Auto tomorrow to buy a manual. Are these engines prone to warped heads/cracked blocks/ or anything I may have gotten screwed on buying it in the condition it's in?
How big of a job is it changing head gaskets? Any info is greatly appreciated, my daughter just wrecked and totaled her car last week, and needs something cheap/dependable to drive.
Thanks, Steve W.
PS....I just found on the internet something called "Steel Seal" which claims to fix head gasket/cracked head leaks by adding it to the coolant, is the "too good to be true???"

I changed the headgasket on my (former) '93 Cavalier 2.2 engine over a period of several weeks. My problems were simple, only an external leak from oothe corner nearest the left front headlight. If it is leaking into the engine, you might have more problems.
I had the head cleaned and shaved by a machine shop, and the job took time but wasn't so bad to do. I did put 25, 000 miles on the car after the repair and had no further problem.

change the motor with one from the scrapper for like 500 bucks and then you wont have to deal with that old motor that is probably in need of a total rebuild because their is antifreeze in the oil and that means that there is oil all in your bearings and you are looking at 200 and some just for the head kit and forget that old motor.

Thanks for the info guys, but nobody really answered my question. Is this motor prone to warped heads/blown gaskets, and is it worth rebuilding?
Thanks again, Steve W.

anything that has been overheated and as result has a leaky head most likely has a warped head

Yes, the 2.2 is prone to head gasket leakage and warping. I would get rid of it and buy something else. The Sunfire is a piece of crap, my daughters 98 needs another head gasket and the rest of the car is falling apart. Put your money into an import like Nissan or Mazda and you will be better off.
