95 intrepid chronic intermittent lip in

Hi, I have a 95 intrepid that has been the source of agony for over a year. It started with a tranny rebuild, then it would shut off and turn on when driving, eventually it would crank but not start. This turned out to be the crankshaft position sensor connector (two mechanics and 6 months later)

anyway, after that was solved, it began tripping into limp in but resetting when shut off. This eventually escalated to a permanent issue. I took it back to the mechanics that had worked on it. They were all confused and did their best to scare me out of having them fix it. The Tranny place took it back and claimed to have changed the speed sensors. That did not work. Eventually they swapped the tranny for a rebuild and claimed that it had to be something from the computer down. (I sort of believe them because they did not put my exhaust back on properly) This did not solve the issue. I checked the codes and they indicated that it might be a cooling system failure. indeed, the radiator was leaking and the tranny coolant hoses showed signs of it too.

so I switched out the radiator. This seemed to help. But a few weeks later it tripped to limp in and reset after restart. The codes I got indicated that the fluid might be low/high. I took in in for an oil change and had the guy check the fluid. He said it was low and filled it. That seemed to solve the problem. But it happened twice in the last few days. both times were within a few minutes of starting out. One when engine was warm, the other when the engine was cooled. of course they both reset after restart. has anyone had a similar issue?
I plan to ensure that it has the appropriate fluid at the appropriate level,
but if that does not solve it, what are the options? In order to ensure that the solenoid pack is ok I need a mechanic, but I do not trust any of them (one guy had it for six months, he got it to work but only temporarily) Does anyone know where a person can get an OBD1 program and connectors for an IBM laptop?
Could this be related to the ignition switch? (I know of a problem there, the heater and widows often won't work, but I jiggle the wire coming off of the ignition and it comes back on.)
any help would be greatly appreciated

I would start by trying to find out what fluid they used when they rebuilt the transmission. These transmissions use a special fluid and if you put in Dextron/Mercron they will fail. The transmission will act the way you are desribing here until one day it will totally fail. Even if you only "top off" the fluid with Dextron/Mercron the trans will fail because the fluid is destructive to the clutches.

I will look into it. If I catch this early will there be any permanent damage?
