Shifting Problem

When I'm driving my car for awhile (20-25 mins, going like 65-70 usually, not sure, I haven't drove around town for along time yet). Lets say I'm on the highway and I have to slow down to go through a town. When I slow down my car will kind of jerk. Then when I try to speed up, my car won't shift, the RPM's just keep going higher and higher until it redlines.(I can go anywhere from 0-70, so I'm assuming like second gear? Not sure, but it redlines at 70 or slightly over) If I put it in park and then put it back into drive, it does nothing. If I turn my car off and turn it back on, it works just fine. My Malfunction Indicator Light is on, but this isn't the first time it has come on. I need to get it looked at. I already know I need a new radiator fan (which I have just need to put it in, and a PCV valve which I will be getting soon since my car has 91k miles). Does anyone know whats wrong with my car? By the way its a 2004 Intreped. I am thinking its a computer problem, but does anyone know? :( thanks

try turning your key on/off 3xs ending in the "on" position. Look at your odometer display and it should spit out a "P0743" code or something to that effect. It sounds like your output speed sensor could be acting up causing your transmission to go into "limp mode" or your transmission automatically defaults to 2nd gear. Another way to find out why your MIL is on is to go to Autozone or Advance Auto Parts and have them pull the code for you.

Is there anything else it could be?Such as something that is going to cost me a lot of money? lol

it could be the solenoid pack, it houses all the solenoids and pressure switches that make the transmission go. Or it also be the Transmission Control Module; you never know until you find out exactly what the codes are.

so what your saying is try that and write down the code and find out what it means?
