h22a idle problem

Hi all,
well I am knew to the group and am accross the waters in the uk. I have just dome some weeks a go my h22a conversion into a rover/honda actually its a rover 600. All went well had a few issues and resolved them all except for the last couple of which one of them is starting to annoy me so if there is any one who could please step in.
Basically my tickover/idle was fine except for an annoying hesistance on the low end of the rpm. I went to a friendly garage and asked them to stick a timing light on it for me to confirm a suspecion and as I saw the timing was at 6 degrees instead of the 15 degrees as stated by the manual. thus I did the following
1. ran the engine until the fans kicked in then turned off.
2. turned ignition off and shorted out the blue connecter.
3. turn the ignition on and started the car, cel light is on.
4. using the strobe light I saw that the timing was out (about 6 degrees)so i slackened the dizzy and rotated until the flywheel 15 degrees mark ligned up on the bell housing mark.
5.Turned ignition off and removed wire from blue connector.
6. Started engine , no cel light (good) checked timing with strobe 15 degree mark is were its ment to be.
7. reved engine and revs go up no probloem.
8. when throttle is released the revs go down to 700 +/- 50 rpm then back up to just under 900 rpm then back down to 700rpm and ticks over fine.
I repeat 7 and 8 and its the same so what gives, also I reset the ecu no difference
Engine hesitation has gone but I have this annoying problem as above so any advice please help

Try these and see if it helps you
-Clean IAC valve (located behind the valve cover, right under where it says PGM-Fi on your intake manifold)
-Clean EGR valve(located behind your valve cover on the passangerside, right under the corner bolt holding the valve cover down. Usually has a little hose attached with a number on it)

i have checked all this, The tick over was not a problem when the car ignition was set at 6 degrees but i was getting hesitation when pulling away. Now that i set it to were it should be i get no hesitation any more just a lovel smooth pull right through the revs but when I come to a stop the revs do not sit at 700 rpm properly. It goes up to 900+ then slowly goes bact to 700. it never did this before so its safe to say its since i corrected the ignition problem. Could I have upset the idle screw setting by altering the ignition timing?

messing with the timing means a world of difference on how it idles. The timing, in a way, is what operates the opening and closing of the valves. If your timing isnt like stock, it can alter your idle.

Well the 6 degrees was wrong its now at 15 degrees as per the manual and it drives mint , i guess that if its messed up the idle then the idle needs to be reset.
Am I thinking correct?

hmm I was going to do this tonite but I ended up plastering walls. Anyway I think I have all the info so correct me if I am wrong.
1,get the car warm so that the fans kick in.
2. turn off engine and disconnect idle valve connector.
3. start engine and get revs to hold so that it ticks over which will be about 550 with the valve disconnected ( i Think)
4. Adjust revs via idle screw to about 750 rpm.
5. switch off engine and reconnect the idle valve and reset ecu.
6. restart car and leave to tick over but run with headlights/heated rear windscreen on for about 5 mins.
I think thats it, but if I have misssed some thing please feel free to shed some light on my mistake.
