Montero-1992 or similar

I am looking a Montero either a 1992 or 1993, with 118,000 miles owned by a friend. Looks decent, he has had significant engine work done. Without seeing the paperwork, he said he had the top end of the engine rebuilt. He tells me there's still a ticking in the engine and it uses oil (apparently burns it as there is no driveway stain). My information tells me the ticking is a lifter, and maybe the oil pressure is low. The oil use is past the piston rings because these were not done on the top end engine work. Any information about these vehicles, engines, drive trains, etc., and what to look for would be appreciated!
