I have a 89 Prelude with 310K and it has starting problem. When I try to start the car, there is only a CLICK sound coming from the starter but the car would not fire. However, if I bang on the starter with another person turn the key on, then the car fire up with no problem. I already changed the starter three times and battery. This happen often during hot summer day. It also would not start duing the night when the headlight is turn on.
From what I suspect, there maybe a short that cause my battery to drain. Another thing that may cause my problem is the aftermarket alarm system. I have this installed 10 yrs ago and it could cause a short.
The car is still in great shape and the engine run great. If anyone have similar problem of know the answer, please help. Thanks.

Wow 310k! Honda tough huh. Try checking gound and power wires. But Im guessing that its the starter if you have to bang on it. As for the starting power. Try starting the car and put a volt meter on it. See what the Alt. is putting out. You should buy my motor that I have listed on ebay man. Has 96K on it. with 310k your about due. Here is the link

Could still be the starter if you are buying cheapos. But check all cables to and from the battery.

might be an electrical connection tied in w/ the starter. since when u bang on it it starts, but otherwise just clicks. sounds like the solenoid is popping out, but the starter isn't spinning. most likely a bad starter. but since u mentioned the headlights causing a no start, also check into the alternator. sounds like the battery isn't getting charged all the way back up. y would u turn u'r headlights on before starting the car anyway??? that just makes the battery work that much harder.

dude, find yourself a discount auto parts or something and try a new starter. if it wasn't that, return it. if it was, well, they usually come with a lifetime warranty, so you can keep replacing them over and over again, for free.
