Catalytic Converter

I recently took my converter to my friend's shop to hollow it out. This made my exhaust sound a whole lot louder and deeper, but I was wondering if there was some detrimental effect that a hollow converter could have on my engine? It runs great, Ive had it like that for about a week now. My friend has a shop, and says he does it to 240sx's and other imports all the time because he says it makes them run a lot better combined with a cold air intake kit, but I was wondering if anyone knew if this causes any damage to the engine.

My "SES" light came on after it was hollowed out, but its normal cause its the catalytic converter code, and I dont really have a problem driving around with it on all the time, just as long as it doesnt do something to the engine. I was just wondering cause Ive seen some cars that when the O2 sensors on the cats start going bad, it tells the computer that too much O2 is going thru the cat, and it makes the computer run your engine rich in fuel, and sometimes floods your cylinders. I dont think mine is doing anything like that though, because it feels like its running better than before, I dont smell any fuel when im driving it, and i like the way my exhaust sounds now. I was also wondering if anyone knows if those K&N air intake kits for the 4.3s really work good, and are really worth the 270$. thanks.

What year of truck?

Also, you should get an O2 sensor simulator to go into the post cat sensor harness to trick the comp that all is fine.

That rear sensor does control the long term fuel trim so I wouldn't run it without the sim for long.

Cold Air Intakes are really worth it. Grab one off of ebay for $60.
