Difference between 3000GT & GTO VR4?

Is there any difference between the 3000GT VR4 (94-99) and the JDM GTO VR4 (93-99)
The GTO VR-4 always seems to be at 280hp whereas the 3000GT is 320hp. Are they actually just the same in physical composition or is the JDM version mildly detuned compared to the 3000GT? Does this also mean that the 90-91 GTO is at 300hp likewise with the 3000GT?

The Japanese get there hp readings by different methods. As far as I know they had the same hp levels between the two. The GTO was right hand drive, obviously, had amber turn signals on the tails, differnt center garnish, different badging. The center guages were different as well.

The GTO has a bigger 13g turbos, the 280 thing is just because Japanese carmakers are wierd and don't make a car with more for their markets I think, or at least they say that they're only 280 when they know they are lots more. The GTOs in europe have power folding mirriors because of those crazy slim european streets. Ohh and the GTO says GTO on the rear garnish and not 3000GT ;).

Actually the GTO had 9b's just like us. It was the Euro spec 3000gts that got 13g's. I got that info directly from a UK3s member.

I figured that since they were both the GTO they would both have the same turbos.

Actually Japan was the only one to get GTO's. The GTO's in the UK or elsewhere in Europe were imported or bought directly from Japan. The Euro spec 3000gt got the 13g's, and a different front end.

That didnt really make sence, you said europe didnt get GTO's, but then said that there is a euro spec GTO.
Also the The gearing for the jdm ones are shorter for the 6 speed, and there was no "VR4" instead it was just the "twin turbo" model.

Reread what I typed.:) I said euro spec 3000gt's, then I said the GTO's in Europe were bought directly from Japan. The GTO's were not sold new in any country other than Japan.
Ooh yeah I forgot about the gearing difference.

Well I think you guys have answered my question so thanks. Dunno about these euro spec 3000GT with 13G's, but GTO MR's have 11G turbos. There is a video of one of these just hauling off a Skyline GT-R in a drag race - quite impressive!

The MR is the z15 chassis. It is basically lightened up by removing luxury items. It is basically a base GTO with tt's. Remember all GTO's were AWD.

he he i know what you mean, there seems to be a lot of myths about the gto but unfortunately most of them are not true.
sometimes i wish i knew what i know now about the 3gt models as i would definately gone for an MR model or a euro spec 3gt. i hate my 9b's!!!!!
As i have said on more than 1 occasion people... when they blow, DO NOT REBUILD THEM! put them to the graveyard and get some proper babies on there. i deeply regret rebuilding mine. lol.

yeah it was news to me until I read this. They can be easily confused with 13g turbos to make things more interesting.

first of all if the GTO says it has 280 ps it means it has 280 hp on the wheels and the 300hp 3000gt is the 300hp in the flywheel, also the gto is faster the the 3000gt dew to the USA smog rules and custom stuff

first of all hello, im new to this forum but i have been around AF for a while. ok now that, that is over with...
japan has some kind of law/stipulation where car manufacturers can only put out a max of 280hp. so, the japanese companies make these cars and sell them and put a HP rating under 280hp. hence, why GTR's only claim 276hp but dyno at well over 300hp stock. same with supras, 300zx, rx7's, and 3000gt/GTO. i am pretty sure that is how it works over there in JDM world.

Japan has much more strigent smog laws than the US does. The GTO's are no faster than the VR4's unless you consider a MR which is lighter. Also the reason it shows 280ps is because Japan and everywhere else uses tghe metric system. They have a different formula for horsepower. It is the exact same hp as a 3000gt. There is no way in a hell a stock 3000gt or GTO has 280hp to the wheels. Most have around 230-240 at the wheels.

hey man sorry for my ignorance but great info dude but in the spec of the gto and 3000gt i think the gto is faster than the 3000gt cause i have seen in some best motoring videos and yeah the MR is the king for gto or 3000gt
