96 Lumina chugging/stalling/no start

Okay, I own a 96 Lumina and I've had it for a year.....lately (for the past 2-3 weeks) it will chug every once in awhile as I'm driving down the road. When I say chugging, I mean that my car will feel like it's not getting enough gas or something, even though I have over a half a tank. I've been told this could be the fuel filter - is that true?

Then, the other day I was driving along and I used the brakes because someone was turning in front of me and my car just stalled out, no noises, nothing, the engine just shut off.

Now, as of yesterday, my car won't start at all. I'm currently charging the battery to see if that's the problem, but I'll have to wait and see. Even if this is the problem, I don't think that it has anything to do with the chugging that I've been experiencing, so I'm all confused - could someone please help me?

P.S. If anyone has any ideas as to what these problems may be, could you please also tell me how much they may cost? I'm a college student so I don't exactly have a lot of money to be putting into this.

Okay, i recharged my battery becasue it was about halfway down and then my car started. The problem was, it only runs for 15-30 seconds and then it just shuts off. It doesn't make any odd noises or anything, it just stalls out - any ideas??

Could it be a sensor or something that keeps shutting my car off.

I turned my car on and unplugged the battery and it ran great, so i went and had it tested and foudn that I needed a new battery. So I got a new one and now I'm taking my car to Auto Zone to have it put on the diagnostics machine because my check engine light has been on for some time. Hopefully they will find out why my car is chugging (if that wasnt' caused by the battery) and what parts I need to fix it.

Look at downtowns symptoms in the respond asap post, the stalling sounds like the same thing he had, fuel filter fixed him.
