Anti Lock Brakes

I have a chevy silverado the 327 5.3 liter.

Recently, when I am slowing down to stop if I am just "feathering" the brakes the anti lock brakes turn on. Its become a real problem because I have nearly run into some things. I have noticed it when I was going faster, just when going slow (like turning into a parking spot). It turns on.

I know a "junk yard mechanic" and I was hoping I could figure out some things to look at before taking into a high price dealer and get it hooked up to the computer.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

First thing I'd check is the wheel sensors to make sure that they're clean and free of dirt and build up that could cause abnormal braking behavior. If you need to disable the abs system it's the 60a fuse in the box under the hood on the drivers side. BTW the 5.3 is 325 cubic inches in displacement.

Thanks,

I willl have someone that knows more than myself have a look at the sensors.

Will disabling the ABS cause any other braking problems?

I personally don't like it, but some engineers must think it does a better job than a human can do.

No removing the fuse won't cause you any problems as it only disables the abs function. I prefered my silverado with them disabled after I had an incident when I lost almost all of my braking power at a low speed and ran through an intersection at night. I called chevy about that one but they didn't do anything. One thing that I did notice with my truck was that if I was braking and came across a small bump or series of small bumps that the abs would engage. If I pushed harder on the pedal it would stop and brake normally so if this is what you're experiencing then just push harder on the pedal.
