My lumina seems to not want to accelerate. I was going 70 mph and all of a sudden it began losing speed. I pressed on the gas pedal but it did not help. It coasted to a complete stop. The engine never turned off either. There was power in the car but i was unable to accelerate. The gas pedal was dead. This has happened 3 x. Can anyone out there tell me what the problem is ? Thanks a bunch....

There might be a problem with the fuel pump. Is the car start now? If so does it run good while it's in park, and goes to crap when you only try to drive it? Reply back and I'll try my best to help you.

Yes to all your questions. Does not go to crap. I have not changed the fuel pump yet. Car ran fine yesterday. Maybe some isolated incidents. But scary. Thank you tigger 81.

You might have snapped the throttle cable.

If i did snap the throttle cable would the car still intermittently run fine?

hmmm nvm then... Did your check engine light come on when it did that?

No. Bye the way i am not snapping at anyone it is just the way i come across. To the point abrupt.

I have provided all the specifics of the situation. I have left out nothing!!! Thanks again for any suggestions.

check all grounds, maybe a bad throttle position sensor, or bad ECM itself. I dont know what else to say. Good Luck.

The only reason it would do abolutely nothing is if the throttle wasnt opening. At all. You are sure that is does absouletly nothing when you press on the gas but it will be fine after you stop? You said there was power but you werent able to accelerate. That doesnt make any sense. If there was power you would surely accelerate. If you could not accelerate then there could be no power. So which is it? When you hit the gas does it do anything at all? Any difference in the sound of the engine? Anything at all?

Maybe its an intermittent transmission problem. If the engine runs but you're not going anywhere...

What I mean by power is the car is on. Stereo is on. Windows roll up and down. Etc... However the car will not accelerate when i step on the gas pedal. It won't acccelerate. it has no effect. it just coasts to a stop. I turn it off and proceed. It has happened to me 4 x in the last week. When i hit the gas it does nothing at all. there is no different sound in the enging. No rpm movement. No rev. No nothing. It is as if the gas pedal itself was just disconnected.

No check engine light appears.

So the engine is dying when you are moving. You stop, turn the key off, restart the engine and continue on. Correct?

The engine is not dying. It is on. It will not accelerate. The engine is fine. I turn off the engine after it coasts to a stop while the engine is running because i have no acceleration.

You're sure the engine is still on?

I hate to ask so many questions but with a problem like this... Its kinda confusing really

The solution was a new fuel pump. Car is doing great once again. So Far!!! It also was not the modulator.

Find out where the throttle cable comes out at by the engine, and next time it happens, coast to a stop over to the side of the road, leave it running, and get out, and manually pull the throttle cable. Make absolutely sure its in park when you do this though. If it doesnt rev, I stand by my previous post of the Throttle Position Sensor.

In reguards to 98Lumina's Post.... no, just look where all the cables run together, somewhere around the throttle body, actually right at the throttle body, should be anyways, it doesnt atter what one you pull on, just turn the "butterfly". I don't know of a much better way to describe this. It should be a round sort of thing where all the cables come and hook onto. Turn this. If the car revvs, then the cable between the gas pedal and that is bad, if not, try your throttle position sensor, or... fuel pump? Anyways, report back, good luck.
