How to reset "Service Engine Soon" light

The Service Engine Soon light came on in my 2000 Silverado (100,000 miles).

I checked the gas cap for tightness, filled up with high octane gas, and poured Injection Cleaner in the tank.

I'm ready to take it into my mechanic, as the light remains on after 50 miles. But he says you need to reset the computer (after doing the work) for the light to go out.

Anyone kow how to do this?

Thanks in advance

Turn the key to auxilliary and press in the gas pedal three times all the way to the floor . You need to do it pretty fast for it to work.

Pushing the gas pedal three times within five seconds is only to reset the Change Engine Oil light, I believe.

If you take your truck into a chevy deler they can hook you truck to there computor to see what codes have made the light come on. Some times it will come on due to the fact it is time for service. But it also may be something starting to go bad in the truck. Any way they can reste your computor. I have had this done with no charge.

Right. I think I'll take it in to the dealer as advised, unless someone has another suggestions.

Thanks

Take your truck to AutoZone. They will read out the code and tell you what it means. If you ask them they will reset it also. Free of charge. I bought an AutoXray scanner finally and now can do it myself. Other chain parts houses should be able to do the same for you. Good luck :)

When thew SES light comes on, the PCM has seen a problem with an emission control componant and has set a code..clearing the code and turning off the light without diagnosising and repairing the cause will do nothing but mask the problem.
There are about 100 codes for emission control componants and about 30 for trans

If your SES light is on, I agree with GMMERLIN, I'm not sure if you can do it on a 00' but on my 91, I can jumper point "A" & "B" on the diagnostic block located under the steering column, count the flashes then refer to my Haynes manual to match the code with a componant. This will save you the money of diagnostic charges at the dealer. IMPORTANT: After you replace the defective part, you need to clear the codes by disconnecting your negative battery for about 2 minutes. Good luck.

How do you like the AutoXray scanner? Have been looking for a scan tool for some time now. I've heard of AutoXray before but never run into anyone that has one. What did you pay, if you don't mind. There's a lot of them out there and I'm sure a lot of them are junk.

I bought the 6000 model on ebay. It was around 550.00 Excellent tool as it shows real time data as you drive! It is CAN complient for the new cars coming out after OBDII goes away. :grinno:

I guess i don't understand why you would want to reset the service engine soon light.... it obviously means that you need to take it in and get something checked, or something's wrong. And in that case, wouldn't the mechanics reset it...?? Sorry, it just doesn't make sense to me.

If you have a scan tool, you can diagnose the problem and many times fix it yourself. Obviously, after the problem is fixed, you can reset the "service engine soon" light. There will come a time when your warranty is up and the dealer will charge big bucks to diagnose and fix your problem. Most of us would rather do it ourselves if we can after the warranty is up.

I've updated the URL in the above post. It went to the homepage instead of Chevy truck page. Also, I've copied the instructions off that page - in case members wish to avoid such an ad-heavy site.

What does this all have to do with a SES light?

Not a thing. Some folks got confused, and derailed the thread.
