Failed emissions in NY, help needed

I recently brought a '00 SH with 64k mi on it. I brought the car to my mechanic and the car failed emissions due to the CO content reading 12.38 gpm, 10 gpm being the limit. He recommended replacing the O2 sensors. I spoke to the original owner and he had never replaced the sensors before. The mods on the car are: Greddy EVO catback, DC header, AEM CAI, and Random-tech high flow catalytic converter. I would be really upset if I spent the $250 parts + $160 labor on replacing the O2 sensors and the car failed again, so I was wondering if anyone failed their emissions and what they did to fix it and pass. Is there anything else besides the O2 sensor that would lower CO content? Thanks !

go to pep boys, for 10 bucks get this stuff that you put in your gas tank to pass the test. your not to much above the limit

yea it seems other forums agree that it is the catalytic converter, but i was under the impression that random technologies made their converters to be emissions compliant. i guess i will try the emissions fluid and if that doesn't work i'll have to spend the moolah to replace the catalytic converter.... that sux

should've kept your stock cat, whenever i add something to my car i keep the original parts just in case.

I woulda kept the stock but I brought the car used with the aftermarket mods already installed, no OEM parts.

not ur cat. im sorry its not unless it went bad, because i have a high flow cat from r/t and it actually made me pass emissions. i repleced that and the O2 sensor and yay!. and md emissions are a lot lower than ny's i think our cutoff point is like 8.00 for co2. so unless the cat is bad( tap it see if anything rattles) it isnt teh R/T product.

You might want to give the car a "basic" tune up, Distributor, rotor, plugs and wires... and even a new coil. Make sure you get the right plugs, if the fuel/air mix isn't burning completely and clean, you will get carbon and junk on your O2 sensor and fail your smog.

Now that I think about it, could it be the Apexi VAFCII that is disrupting the fuel/air mix and thereby causing the CO to skyrocket? The car has it installed and I have no clue how to operate it. If I reset the ECU will it bring back the original settings for the fuel/air mix? Maybe this + getting the emissions pass fluid will do the trick?

update for those still following this thread... i put some of that guaranteed to pass emissions fluid in my gas, and the car passed with flying colors. what a great product.
