i have a 97 lude automatic and today after just starting the car up after it was sitting for about 5 hours i put it in sport shift and started hammering on it right away, when the vtec was supposed to kick in it started hesitating and not working properly so i came to a complete stop and when the temperture gauge started moving i hit on it again and the vtec worked fine... any ideas? do you think it just needed to warm up a little bit?

yeah its one of the factors vtec needs in order to engage; proper oil pressure and/or operating temperature.

don't worry about it, its normal.

unwarmed up engine + vtec=big no no always let your engine warm up before you vtec

yup, different parts of the engine expand at different rates. if your engine isn't at its operating temperature you can cause very serious damage. you don't neccesarily have to sit in your car for 4 minutes before driving off, just don't drive the car hard before its warm.
