my old trusty 1987 prelude is finally giving me a problem. has over 150,000 miles on it and still runs like a sewing machine. now i am getting this strong gas smell in the inside especially when a window is open. no smell in the engine compartment. does smell a little around the tank cap. any hints on where to start looking or do i need to pull the tank and start working to the front? thanks, Rich

lift up the car, look under and trace the fuel line from the tank to the engine, to make sure you don't have any leaks. It'll be difficult to find where exactly it is leaking because gasoline evaporates so quickly.

yeah rubix777 is right, it is hard to spot. i had a leak in a truck i owned, and it helped to look for it right after it was running. then you'll be able to spot moisture on the fuel lines. also, the hoses from the lines to the sending unit tend to be the problem in a lot of vehicles. but you'd need to drop the tank to see them.

took the cover hiding the fuel pump off this morning and everything looked good. outside the car, i smell gas mostly around the fuel cap. is this a vented or closed system. bought a cap from a local auto parts store and application said it was a regular cap. honda might have something different!!!!! new cap didnt make any difference. of course it was a vented cap. guess next step will be removal of the tank unless there are other suggestions. thank you to the replyers.
