Can a 3.1 be supercharged?

I was wondering if anyone out there knew if it was possible and if the parts are made to fit a supercharger on to a 3.1 not a 3.8 like the newer models. This is just a thought that had crossed my mind of getting more horsepower.

My honest opinion would be do not spend large amounts of money on a 3.1. They are a great motor for dependibility but not performance. My suggestion would be to buy a different car or find out if a supercharged 3800 will fit in a 95 and start searching junk yards for a demolished gtp or buick regal gs "supercharged". And grab the motor, tranny and computer and have at her.

Yes, it can. The other nite when I saw this thread made a Yahoo search on 'GM'+'Supercharger'. You would be amazed as how many people outthere SC even their boat engines. They will SC whatever, 4, 6 or 8 cyls. make the search and look for your self. That is going to be expensive and something would break sooner than later on your car, that is a fact. But that can be done, yes it can be done

so whats up i have not been able to find anything for my 94 grand prix se i have the 2 1/2 inch factory ground effects but as for aftermarket i cant find anthing and also cold air intake or ram air intake install diagrams or a site to buy. i found some universal hood scoops that would work but i dont know how to hook it up to the hood. anything would help even performance injectors for the 3.1 or dual exhust links for the 94. also sway bars i cant find i work in a metal shop so i could probably make some kind of aluminum ground effects.

Ok, check on http://www.zzperformance.com and look for Centrifugal Supercharger. IF not look on Yahoo for centrifugal supercharger. I have seen these folks CSC Monte Carlos, Cavaliers, Impalas, whatever they could. The smallest CSC is the Novi 1000 and pushes 6psi. Nice.
Look for this at ZZP or make a search on yahoo for Novi 1000

There is no kit for a 3.1. What these people do is install a SC on a rather stock engine. That is for stage I. I think(I am not sure) that they sell you a recalibrated ECU(PCM) if you want to add more boost than that. Check on http://www.zzperformance.com

A intercooler is for boosted aplications. So unless you are turbo'd or supercharged you dont need one

Well as soon as you install the Novi1000 to your car then you can install an intercooler. Before that it would not make any sense

Any significant boost is going to blow a 3.1 engine pretty quickly if the transmission does not implode first. Just do basic intake\exhaust stuff on that engine or swap it out for a 3.8 of some sort if you want some real power.

thanx joe joe , wow that was one of the first straight awnsers ive heard, i think after i get my cold air i will probably sell my car, it will be cheaper than getting a new engine to replace mine, i guess the only reason i havent sold my car yet is that its over 10 years old and the body is in mint and the engine still runs like new. also one question i have is that 90-95 all of the grand prix's have 2-3 different body styles why is this? i have herd of those being called the bastard years.. yup

WOW!!!!! I have heard alot of people say bad things but never about a 3.1 litre v-6. I had a 1993 lumina with it and i homebrewed a cold air intake. I i smoked more than a few people with it. Before i got rid of it i had 216,000 miles on it and i never even had to replace anything on it. Now i have a 1991 GP with the same motor but this one is bored over and has oversized injectors. I am not ever scared to light em up. Even the Tranny in the lumina was fine the guy who bought it took it to certified transmissions and they said other than maybe a flush and filter she was great. So I say beat the pesos out of it. Supercharge it til you drop.

I believe the McLaren Grand Prix Turbo was made 89-90 which had the standard 3.1L V6 but had a added turbocharger and intercooler made bu McLaren Engines. There were 3725 made in 89 and 3750 in 90. They have 205hp, but only came in automatic. I'd say find one of those engines and transmissions and do a full swap.

and then again, why supercharge it? if you get 100 hp out of a supercharger, 30 of that is gonna be going towards running the pullies. where as a turbo runs cooler and only uses 10-15hp

Well, if there is a turbo setup already available for your engine go for it.

you know ... 205 hp isn't a very big number for all the different things that are going to done to get this goal. you probably would need a diff tranny, torque converter, a better cam, an exhaust system to allow you to hook up a turbo, better fuel system and a new chip to make everything work. it would be a very high dollar to lowww power ratio. i'd say go with the 3800 s/c, tranny and computer swap.

good luck finding a turbo grand prix unless your going to buy a running grand prix and tear the engine out of it and put it in your car which makes no sense. just drive the turbo one or do a swap from a 97 or newer supercharged grand prix i can get an 04 engine and every thing needed to do the swap for 2600 shipped to my door! good luck finding a wrecked turbo grand prix that some one hasnt already stole the parts off. just do the swap im getting one in october for my 1995 GTP, i can only do one part at a time this sumemr ive already got full audio system waiting in my room and its getting painted after the 4th., heres a link to some supercharged engines for sale.

www.l67swap.com ( for directions how to)
thats who im getting mine from for $2600 and zero miles try beat that any where with any package i doubt you will
supercharged 3.8 2004 model
tranny and all the wiring
$2600
there goes my basic trainning money :evillol:
about $3000 should cover the swap completly i think
