1971 Pontiac Grand Prix SJ 455

I just bought this car today. It has 72,000 original miles , clean. I foundd the protect o plate in the trunk and build sheet. It has power everything , 8 track - loaded. What is it worth? What should I expect as far as performance (not running carb problems). Looking forward to talking Pontiacs on here. I have (2) GTO's too - BH

IT is funny, but the Kelly Blue Book online only covers until 1984. I can tell you for real that classics depends on the buyer. My brother and I share a 1969 396 Chevelle convertible, Moonsy shifter/tranny, Possy Traction(444) differential and other neat stuff and a guy came from New York and offered us 35k for the car. But that depends on the buyer and the car. I had a friend that rebuilt a 57 belair convertible and he sold it for 85k. That was unbeleivalble. He invested 25k on the car and got out of it 200% of the investment.
I can tell you from what I have learned on the history channel that the most expensive(now) and better muscle cars were made from 1964 to 1969. After the oil crisis that started on 1970 and the government imposed emision regulations the muscle car era was never the same. Even tought they got big engines like your 455 an older 350, 396 or even a 427(Yenko) would have a lot more power than yours and would be really well respected on the road.

First off I would like to say that the 1969-1977 grand prix's were beautiful cars. In my opinion 71' and 72' were the best design. I have looked at quite a few 71's and they are worth around
$5500-10500 depending on the shape they are in and if they have a 400 or a 455. If you have a 400 the car should have stock about 320 horses if you have a 455 the car should have about 360 horse. Also, I don't think that the only good years for cars were 64-70. Even though the cars didn't have as much power as say a 69' or 70' 455 has they were still beautiful cars. Really the muscle cars of 64-70 were only good for going in a straight line they didn't handle the greatest in my opinion power isn't everything, but like I said that is my opinion. Hope this helps. Not a lot of these left. Check the engine serial # to see if it's a SD (Super Duty), rarer yet. Not a big fan of this body line, but I have a sincere appreciation and respect for this machine.

The block is a YC code - I believe a 325hp engine. I need a carburetor for the 455 - anybody have one for sale reasonable? Oh yea I paid $ 750.00 for the Grand Prix - BH

What kind of power would a stock 428 have???

A stock 428 should have about 350-370 horse. A 428 is a bad ass engine.

:smile: Hello, this is my first post. I have a 72 Gp with a 400 4bbl and 400 turbo trans. I've been restoring it for about 2 years.
As far as what your car is worth, I've seen 400 and 455 cars in the trader go for anywhere from $7,000 to $10,000. Thats restored or in great shape.
As far as parts go, I've searched the web up and down look'n for parts for mine. I found only 2 companys that cater to our Gp's.

Or Jim Butler Performance, they are the ppl who know pontiac engines. They have stuff you can't find anywhere else. I guess if you own 2 GTO's you know this, I forgot about that.

To be honest the cars that I followed from the 64 to 71 Muscle car era are: Monte Carlos, Chevelles, GTO's(of course), Tangs, Cobras, Shelby's and Vettes. I started liking GP's when I saw the first 97 GTP really gorgeous. I respect all muscle cars tought. That was the time when they took a look into details

My first car was a 1976 Grand Prix limited edition. It was 2 tone silver / grey with black velour interior. Has anybody ever seen one? BH
