OK, i have a burb with 160k miles on it. i need you guys opinions.....

how long is it really gonna last? ive only owned the burb 8 months, and have put almost 13k miles on it. bottom line, i have to drive waaaay to much. i can still sell it for what i paid for it (8 grand). should i sell? if i get a car with 72k miles on it, am i gonna have lots of problems with it as well?

please help, theres a car i may buy if enough people say i should sell my burb

-Rob

burb is 4x4 gmc, 1500, leather interior, tv, dvd, running boards (not on, but will sell with it) rear air, tons of options, 5.7 liter, i just spent 1500 on parts to fix stuff on it over the last 8 months.

Has the transmission been replaced or the engine been overhauled?

that would be a negatory on both of those....

(hence why selling is lookin all the sweeter...)

Yeah, I would probably sell it if I were you.

Good call, by the time I had gotten to that mileage in my older one, I had gone through 1 trans 3 rear ends a xfer case A/C compressor, 8 alternators, etc.

Between a trans and rear end you could be talking 3 or 4K..,

I have 186k miles on a '95 with the original engine/tranny. The engine is still fine and the tranny isn't bad either. I think it depends a lot on how hard you push it. I don't tow but I carry a lot of weight (people/ luggage). The problem is you have no clue how well the truck was maintained before you bought it. Hopefully they changed the oil and never let it run low. You should get the engine compression checked along with testing the oil pressure to see if you have any imminent problems.

ive decided to put any rash decisions aside. im keeping my burb for now, we shall see how much stuff goes wrong before summer. im lookin into learning how to ride a motorcycle, then maybe ill just keep both. i found out insurace on a bike in CA only costs 75 bucks a year. beats the $2000+ im paying right now for the burb, or the $3800+ id be paying if i bought the car i was looking into (96 trans am, LT-1 engine, 6 spd manual tranny *my dream car*)

(if anyone has any suggestions of newer low mileage cars that i should look into that ARENT imported, and that dont suck, lemme know. i cant think of any really, so im looking at going to a motorcycle instead and keeping the burb as well.)

I have three Suburbans. 1985 1500 4x4 with 287,000 miles. Replaced the transmission at 220,000 and rear end at 240,000. Original engine (rear main leaks) and transfer case. I sometimes pull a boat. Daily driver. 11 mpg. Passes CA smog. I have a 1998 1500, 4x4 70,000 miles. Wife's daily driver. Lots of stop and go. All day long. Replaced water pump and fuel pump. three sets of tires. 12 mpg. Just bought a 2003 1500, 4x4. So...if you treat it right, perform regular maintenance, keep a log, and have some luck, you could have your truck for many more years.

I have an 89 2500 4x4 with about 210,000. At 190k I had the trans rebuilt & put a GMC crate (new) engine in it because it is one tuff truck. I'm a land surveyor, the Sub is used every day by one of my crews. Before the new engine the employees had driven it on 1 quart of oil, along with many other abuses.

It totaled 3 other vehicles (all their faults), including a new Range Rover, with only minor damage.

Once jumped a 5 ft. wide ditch with vertical sides (I did that).

Have had off road many times, is a very good off roader as long as you take care of the overhangs (I ordered front & rear positraction diffs as well as no carpeting so it can be hosed off).

Always carries about 2000 lbs of equipment & 2 to 4 men.

Its now a classic. New trucks just are not as tuff, but my wifes daily driver (she's also a surveyor) is a K2500 4x4 w/ 8.1L 2001 LT. That autoride is so good.

BTW, I also have a bike. That insurance quote is very limited. If a under/unisured cage driver hits you, and you are out of work for a year, good luck living on $0. I won't ride without 250K/500k uninsured motorist. Costs me about $750/year on a BMW R1150R.
