1996 Cerokee with 4.0L.
Smell gas and then runs rough.
Turn key off for 1 minute, start back and ok.
Bad egr valve?
Can I unhook egr valve to see?

the egr system on the jeep shouldn't have anything to do with the smell of gas. and if you do smell gas coming from the egr it should be very faint, or you aren't burning all the fuel in the cylinders that you should. yes you can unhook the egr and it will run, but rough. i was having the same problem with my 89 cherokee. i would press on the gas and it would only bring the rpm so hig. i went through putting on a new fuel filter, control module spark plugs, distributor cap egr valve and it ended up being the catalytic converter, it was plugged. i put on a new one and it runs better than it ever has. tell me a bit more about what is happening when it's running and i can help you more

As far as the CC goes, it's new also.
I have since found a wire that was, I think, shorting out against the exhaust that goes to a sensor that screws into the exhaust.
I am hoping that this is the problem as in telling the computer something it should not have been.

Also have found out that they quit using egr valves after 1990, so they are telling me.

I know I have looked all over it for one and can not find one.

I will let you know about the burnt wire.

I'd check the oxygen sensor. afaik it provides the imput that the computer uses to determine fuel/air mixture.

btw- I think it needs replaced about every 60k miles. where are you at on milage and when was the last time yours was replaced?

Well, I taped the burnt wire up on the 26th. and as of this writing on the 30th. it has run without a hitch.

Could not ask one to run any better than it has.
I think the burnt wire was shorting out and telling the computer something it was not suppose to.

Just wanted to pass this along in case someone else runs upon this same mind draing problem. :banghead:
