So I park my car downtown on the street Sat. night, stay overnight, and wake up to...
an empty curb.
Yay!
Turns out I was parked in a 30-min. zone I didn't notice the curb painted (several spots were marked by the curb-paint), so I assumed it got towed... then I began HOPING it got towed when there was no record of it, but nope!
I didn't have any special alarm, but it did have the one that goes off if you don't use the clicker & all, and it was locked.
The cop that took the report said in 15 sec. w/ a screwdriver he could be in my car & have it started. Said they recover 'em about 90% of the time within 2 weeks, but the seats are pretty much gauranteed to be gone if nothing else. $500 deductible time for me, and if they don't find it (in 3-4 weeks or so), I get to go shoppin' for a new one, heh.
He also said The Club is a decent deterrant, not 'cause it's effective, but 'cause thieves are lazy & will just go grab another Honda that doesn't have one on. Live & learn; but mark my words, listen to the hype, I haven't even had my 'lude for 3 months. :crying:
(I'll update you guys on what happens, but again, I expect it to turn up somewhat trashed & for my insurance to "basically" fix it all up, but man, the thought of some punk probably launching off steep hills and trashing the oilpan as we speak & spilling a coke in it--it'll never be the same) :banghead:

long story: i go to school in columbus (not OSU). my car was parked in the school lot (95 civic, 17's, 4 JBL subs 2-10" 2-12", all rockford power, and typical rice mods) not a pimp car but looked good for what it was. the dipshit that took the car took a huge gouge out of the sheet metal in the door, didnt bother with the cheaper route of breaking the window. tore all the plastic bezels off, sawed holes to steal stuff: cd head, bolted down subs, even shift knob and pedals. bastard. if you are listening i hope that your genitals are burned off in a fire. anyway my car was found: 2HOURS LATER!!! on the other side of town. police dont give a shit unless you have tons of money to throw at them or the city and insurance laughs at you if you dont have separate policies written for add ons.
to end up: my insurance company did not total my car. i got to keep the piece of $hi+ and they only gave me $1200. not enough to buy used parts, even using ebay. i just recently bought a 97 lude and i use the civic for a beater. (quite a beater after ive put about $3000 back into it for parts, paints, interior bs. my point is generic but true: dont think that it wont happen to you...the feeling of walking out to the spot where you thought that your car was parked and seeing nothing is one of the worst feelings in the world. i guess it can be compaired to finding out that your girl is pregnant or the your hampster died or something. take all precautions, put yourself in the mind of the bastard, these guys are actually smart sometimes. and beyond all, realize that if the bastard wants your car, theyre gonna get it...

Thanks for the sympathy so far (well, except for BLU! -- updated the sig. just for you bud, heh... Civics be 0wn1ng my phat Cavalier rental...)
Anyhow, ya, my hope, honestly is that what happened to my friend's VW will happen here: the very day the ins. declared it a total loss & cut him a check, they found the thing all beat up & full of trash. He got to keep his check, but go down the street & get some of what was left of his stuff out of it anyway. Hoping they'll leave some of the stuff I had in the trunk in it anyway (nothing I can't live without, just don't want to have to replace some of it).
If I get the total-loss, though, I'm holdin' out for a Type SH this time. ;)

seriously bro...pray every night before bed that you get that total loss. i mean ive never seen your ride obviously, but from the way you talk our situations are much in the same and if they are youre gonna want that totalage.
i did get one good thing out of my theft (unlike you) and that is a dope ass 2003 silverado truck to drive for a month. i think that it cost me like $50 over what ins. didnt cover for the rental.
as for the Type SH, watch what you buy. i test drove 3 SH's and on 2 of them, the differentials were broken(makes a knocking / screetching noise on tight turns). this was caused by the ATTS system going bad i would assume. i opted to buy a base model which was typically like $2000 cheaper than the SH's. anyway good luck and happy preluding after you get the money. :cwm27:

So why don't you guys invest in a real nice alarm??? I sell alarms (used to do it for years in columbus but now moved about 1.5hr north) and I'll tell you that there are ways to really slow up the thief to the point they'll walk. Notice I said "slow up". Nothing's for sure. Sometimes they just bring a flatbed truck.
But seriously, I just worked on a new SD F-250. The guy lives around here but likes to frequent Columbus and other crime ridden areas. I tried to talk him into a hood lock with tilt switches but he thought it was not necessary. Well, when in Columbus, they broke in. They were not able to get it to start but ended up hacking the battery cables. That didn't do much since the back up battery kicked in. They did find the siren wires and cut those. Since it took so long to get it to be quite, they only were able to get the Eclipse head unit.
After everything was sorted out. He ended up getting the truck repaired and I installed a 2 back up battery sirens, pain generator, and hood lock. I'd be damned that the aholes didn't try it again. This time they left empty handed :loser:

with all due respect bud, because i know you say you sell them, but alarms: DONT WORK!!! a good theif will work right on through an alarm, and sure you can detur theifs with a good enough alarm, but it really defeats the purpose when you start to pay as much for the alarm as the car is worth. this is gonna sound preachy and nerdy but any psychologist will tell you about diffusion of responsibility: when people see someone taking a car, the more people that are around, the less chance of someone doing something to prevent the theft. when my car was stolen, it was facing an extremely busy street, and it happened at noon. probably 30 cars drove by/witnessed this dipshit.
so what do you do? like i said before think like a criminal. even stuff as little as not getting things installed at a major electronics store...they always ask for address, car model, etc. and they know how to take the car probably better than you would. this sounds silly also but dont talk about your car. sure close friends and the internet is fine but if you go around advertising that you have $3000 worth of audio equiptment in your ride, someone shady is bound to find out about it. To be quite honest, the best security system that ive heard of is a "kill switch." im not 100% sure how to do it but ive never heard of anyone getting their whole car jacked with this security mod. plus it costs less than $20 to install and anyone can do it.
just think about your ride and youll never run into these problems. use your brain, and be resourceful. just because you spend $2000, doesnt mean thats insurance.

Just a quick update, my baby's back, and no worse for the wear. They found it only a few blocks from where I left it, and the alarm was still intact, so I'm guessing they were n00bs or something--maybe a training mission, who knows, but last Fri. I didn't even hit my deductible getting it back to 100%, still had all my CDs in the trunk & everything, so who knows, I sure as hell don't claim to understand idiots; but at least it doesn't smell like pee, that's really all I cared about in the end.

Dude you have my deepest sympathies. It’s the worst feeling in the world to look out your window and see your car is gone. I bought my very first car two years ago. It was a 93 Integra. It had real nice rims and a great sound system. I parked it on the street outside my apartment and put a club on it every night. One Saturday morning last year I woke up and it was gone. It was the emptiest feeling I have ever had in my life.
The wankers who stole it drove it 40 miles north and then stripped it. Worse yet, they stripped it in a small alley so it took the tow truck 5 hours to get it out. My policy only covered $250 in towing fees, so I got lumped with $700 in additional towing charges.
On top of that the insurance refused to total it. They paid a body shop $7000 to fix it. The car was only worth $5000. The body shop took 10 weeks to fix it, and when I finally got it back it looked like a piece of shite. Those were the worst 10 weeks in my life.
I was really pissed off. Then the engine started leaking like crazy. Apparently when the rims were stolen, the scumbags never put the car on blocks, so basically it just dropped. I was sick of the car and didn’t want it anymore. A couple of weeks later I was stopped at a light and a car Kamikazed straight into the back of me. He sent me straight under a dump truck! The Integra folded like an accordion. The safety belt locked so hard that I barley moved. Lesson to ye all who don’t believe in them. To top it all off the guy who hit me was a punk kid with no insurance! In the end his folks gave me blue book for car and money for a rental. There was no way I was going to deal with insurance again. I took the money and along with my house savings I picked up a beautiful 98 Prelude.
I guess it was never meant to be with the Integra.
