We have a 1996 lumina and want to put in Remote start for the winter..

question is this car has that stupid security chip on the ignition key.. will we have to do anything different because of this?

Use a IPP03 this will temporaily bypass the vats system for remote starting, or if you wanted to do away with the vats measure the resistance with a ohm meter "one lead on each side of the chip on the key" and look under the dash by the ignition wires for a orange loom with two very small white wires then strip the loom away and cut the wires and get a resistor within .05% of your meter reading and solder the resistor to each end of the white wires leaving the ign switch out of the loop and you will be good to go but if it were me i would get the bypass because it is self learning and fool proof with very few wires to ajoin good luck hope this helps

Ok next question is.

the car kits we've been looking at have alarm, remote start and auto door locks...

This car already has auto door locks. Is there a way I can install this so the remote start has control ofthe door locks? So we dont have to have two remotes?

Yes you sure can. Just grab the gray for lock and white for unlock in either kick panel. They are a + pulse wire.

Go for a DEI starter. They are awesome compared to the others. The new ones even have a dedicated wire to turn on rear defrost too.

Before you spend $30+ on that bypass, just get a good relay and a pack of resistors. I just did one the other day and had about $4 in parts.

the RS-900 Series VI

is the system I was thinking about. I did look further and looks like I will probably just use the Resisitor in the colulm.

The only problem with using the resistor on the vats is you are disableing it completly and not bypassing it but it will work that way, the crimestopper is not that bad but i like the new code alarm they have improved alot over the last year and you might want to look at them but dont pay for DEI its overpriced and not that much better,all of the major brands has its ups and downs so choose wisely just whatever you do stay away from design tech products

I dunno about the Crimestopper stuff. I tried to save money last winter and bought about 30 of them. I had about 15 cars with problems and 3 bad out of the box. I can not afford to have problems like that. Granted it was nice buying them for less than $50 a piece versus $100 for a DEI unit but not for the hassle. You really should look at the new Valet 562t starter. They are completely awesome. Could not believe they could get their starters any better..

Yes, I 2nd the deal about the resistor with some exception. When I work on a new car with VATS I use a resistor with a relay. When you do not remote start, the system is normal but when you remote start it clicks the relay over with the correct value. Thus, you only bypass the OEM security when you remote start it.

Now, when the vehicle has around 75k miles on it I consult the owner. See, the VATS system has one major weak link, the ignition. Those tiny little wires have to go inside the cyl. lock. They have to move when you turn the key which makes them fail over time(I know this personally on my '89 Formula). So, on recomendation from the owner, I might just go ahead and wire a resistor inline and bypassing the system completely. I live in a very rural area and car theft usually isn't that big of a deal.

Well thats kinda the problem,, She dont want to spend too much more than 60-65 buck on a remote start.

I with the options the crimestopper seemed to be the best deal.

Also this relay,, Could you show me where I may purchase this?

just get a SPDT relay i use 40 amp then
85 should go to the ignition
86 to active out of the remote start
87 should have the resistor inline and go to one of the vats wires "with a splice not cut" then cut the other one
87a will go to the ignition side of the cut wire
30 will go to the decoder side of the cut wire
and that will bypass for remote starting and keep the vats working

HVAC=ORANGE
ACC=BROWN
HORN=BLACK-NEGATIVE
----------------------------------
THESE WILL ALL BE IN THE LEFT KICK PANEL
LOCK=LIGHT BLUE
UNLOCK=WHITE
DOOR LOCKS ARE TYPE 1 POSITIVE

I see. Well you can always try the Ebay thing. They are usually selling the older style but most are giving a DOA warranty. I could give you an email address that I know this guy who sells them new under $100. Crimestopper or COdealarm you can easily get for that price you stated.

Yep, make sure you get atleast 2 remotes if not more. They seem not to last more than about 2 years.
