Alright guys,
I'm looking to buy a vtec controller but first I have a few questions you might be able to help me out with.
1) Is there any danger to lowering where the vtec kicks in? If not then why would honda keep it around 5000?
2) Could lowering the vtec cause problems in the future?? Have there been problems from lowering it?
3) What in your opinion is a good model to purchase?
4) I also heard you have to dyno your car once it's installed to get the most benefit out from it. Is that true?

i'm sure honda chose that point to achieve maximum fuel efficiency.

no problems, just don't be setting it at 2000

look into the apexi vafc

dynoing tuning any car with modifications will yield the most benefits so yeah, get it dynoed and adjust the a/f ratio to an optimal point. that all depends on your setup and jsut the way your engine works. every engine responds differently to certain mods.

THe APexi is the way to go. Can be had for $225 now. New model is out, closeout prices on the original. Not many updates on the new.
Also, you really need it dyno'd so your car is tuned properly.
You won't notice the VTEC as much, as the VAFC evens out the powerband.
Reason they kept it around 5000 is likely for emissions and fuel saving.

well if you reset vtec at too low of an rpm then the car will stuble an you will get less power but there is a good medium to be had with the vtec controllers
lowering the vtec shouldnt mess anything up but just remember what del said and you should be on your way

I don't understand why people buy vtec controllers? From what i have heard, it's just a good way to waste money. :frown: No offense or anything; it's your money so spend it however you please.

the fact of the matter is most vtec controllers also come with air/fuel controllers. and that can help you lots. also you may choose to lower the vtec crossover point so that you may shift and stay within the vtec range. lowering the crossover point also flattens the power curve so it's not as peaky. gives you a little more usable power. so instead of having to wait til 5200rpms for some power, all it tkaes is 4500 or so. you can improve your times this way depending on the way you drive your car.

look into the Apexi VAFC II if you have the money. If not, i see the VAFC I s goin for pretty cheap on ebay.
