Hey, everyone witha prelude post your mods and top speed (not theoretical bullshit either, give us that wild ride down the highway the day you almost killed yourself) AND BTW... anyone know about what the top speed of a 1993 SI with i/e/h pulleys would be?

i buried the needle just past the 150 mark on my speedo. that was the one and most likely the only time i'll try to top out. i have i/h/e, vafc, oh and the jrsc might help a little :sunglasse

hey thats pretty awsome, i only asked becasue i havent had the chance to open SI up yet and all these people in the 140's are tlakin about Vtechs. but its completely stock. I srove my buddies 91 eclipse and got up to 106 on I-95... but it wouldnt have gone much faster without drafting behind a semi... so i was hoping and praying my lude would stomp his eclipse. im going to do intake exhaust and headers.... could i hit 125 with that?

147 mph in my friends 98 sh
the first time i was racing a new passat, i started pullin hard on him at 130.

Unfortunately for them, if you can go more than 130MPH you'd be able to pull on any VW or Audi product sold in the US which has not been chip-tuned, since they are all speed limited to 130MPH regardless of how powerful their engine is. Mercedes limits their cars to 150MPH. BMW depends on the model, but most leave off a top-end limiter, and Porsches are free to run.

A stock 1.8T Passat I rented in Germany (where the ECU is not speed-limited) cruised at roughly 140MPH with 3 people on board, very comfortably and with power to spare. My W8 is awaiting a chip to release its potential, but in Europe I've heard a few posts of owners going over 160MPH...like most German cars, they love to run on the top end, designed for those long, wide Autobahns.

In my 1985 Prelude, the max speed I reached was 117MPH...the engine just ran out of momentum to push the car any faster against the aerodynamics, despite having some room left in the RPMs. The car was very stable though!

My fastest speed achieved behind the wheel so far was on the speedway at Daytona, FL in a 1985 Saab 9000 Turbo with aero bodykit...I managed a flying lap average of 148 MPH. My stepfather owned the car, and we went to open track day (they no longer do it, but in the 80's, Daytona had a run-what-you-brung day, which required a helmet only! He ended up chickening out at 120, but really wanted to know what the car could do...so he asked me if I wanted to give it a go) The car had some room for more...but it scared the living shit out of me, and I backed off when I drifted through turn 4 and despite steering input, drifted to within a few inches of the outside wall. I just wasn't trained for that kind of speed at 18 years old!

I limit my high-speed excursions these days to wide open freeways and highways with no traffic...I don't mind endangering my own life, but it isn't right to endanger others to that degree. I will stay under 100MPH when any other cars are on the road with me.

what is a HKS and SMF???

HKS is a Japanese aftermarket company (one of the first in Japan). They offer tuning products for various vehicles, including Honda.

An SMF is a Super-Mega Flow intake, an air-horn shaped intake designed to allow greater airflow into the engine for better mixture, and therefore often a slight increase in power.

I live in Germany and bought my U.S. spec 88 Lude here. I took out and opened it up on the autobahn reaching a top speed of about 135. I bought it with aftermaket header and exhaust and that's it. After 275,00 miles, the engine finally gave way on me, so I found an engine out of a Euro spec lude of the same series (88-91). The engine code is the same (B20A5), but it is noticeably more powerful in all gears, and has a top end speed of over 140. Of course the car only registers 140 on the speedo, but I'm guessing I've had her up to around 145. I've only taken it up there once though, and don't plan to do it again.

So this past weekend I had a good excuse (go see a girl) up in Vancouver, B.C., on Sat. and Mon. The freeway north of Seattle is fairly winding and really fun to drive, on the flats I got the '97 up to 130+ with room to spare, mostly I just didn't have time to finish opening it up before hitting some big curves or some more traffic (I will NOT go fast like that around others, no matter how open it is, it's just not worth it to have a 60+ mph differential speed from someone else that may make a sudden lane change, etc.--so don't try this at home, kids, unless you're a trained professional!) ;)

The highlight of the drive to me is every time you're hitting about 105 in 5th, listening to the VTEC open up & you get that roar & power, I love it. Everything's stock on the Prelude since I've only had it a couple of weeks, but man, I can't wait 'til she invites me up again! :iceslolan

Edit: oh, and in 4 trips (2 up, 2 back) I made awesome time & only ended up with one speeding ticket (70 in a 60, was on the first leg going up the first time, got a really nice radar detector after that which woulda saved me, but hey, if it sticks it's the only ticket on my record now & I can live w/ a 70 in 60, beats 130 in a 70).

Well, my fatherly instinct wants me to say.."You juvinile idiots are gonna hurt yourselves, or worse...someone else!"

But the manly side of me says...

140mph in a 4cyl is kinda impressive... I had an '88 MR2 and I got that to about 125 on the beltway in Maryland 2AM.

My '93 Ford Probe GT (JUNK) was up to 130 with a ways to go, but I ran out of balls.

Then there's the Honda CBR900rr, which is a totally different story. I had that over 150mph. Got kinda scary though. I think that's the fastest I've ever been on the ground.

I don't even remember how fast I had my '89 Prelude up to. My '86 has seen 100, but I don't really want to push it.

Only on a track with a real long straight, or an oval with banked curves.

A few years ago, Montana hiways had their speed limit posted as "Reasonable and Prudent Speed". There was no speed limit. But I hear people were taking advantage of it, so they went back to having a speed limit.

I was fortunate enough to drive through there when there was no speed limit. I was unfortunate enough to be driving a '96 Mitsu. Galant with a wife and two kids in the car. Only got to do 80mph. Sucked.

with different engines for the lude more importantly for the 4th gen does that mean they have different gear ratios which affects what rpm you will be at when your at a certain speed? Like if i had an S going 80 would my rpm be higher than somone on 5th gear in say a Vtec? k thanks

i usually go aobut 70 and topped out at 90 some on 287

The H23 tranny has a longer gear ratio than the H22 tranny. The H22 tranny will cause you to rev higher, but that's what the H22 was made to do, hence +1k on the redline.

I have no idea about the S tranny.

about 150 MPH.

You guys should keep in mind that honda speedometers are somewhat inaccurate above 100-120 MPH. A digital speedo will remedy this. If anyone has a top speed from a digital speedo, post it up.

All mechanical speedos are inaccurate at that sort of speeds, but from the 4g on all Preludes use a VSS, vechile speed sensor, which is totaly electronic. I believe it was also fitted to some of the last 3gs as well.
Its regarded as being extremly accurate, as long as you have both drive wheels on the road.

Anyway back on topic, Iv wound my tortise up to a mighty 130 so far. Thats kmh, not mph. Im sure it would do 160 (100mph) if I pushed it hard enough, but it I generaly get bored by the time it reachs 130, I would fall asleep before it got to 160.
The Civic used to see the speed limiter on a regular basis though, and Iv seen 240+ in a Lotus.

Good to know. Did other models of honda have VSS in the same years?

I believe all the Honda's from 92 on have one, all the VTEC cars deffinitly do as its used as part of the control, and certianly anything from 95 on does, as all the OBD II cars use one.
Prior to 92 all B16a power cars (Civic, CRX and Integra) and possibly the last of the 3g preludes have one.

I couldn't tell if you they are interchangable between differnt models though, as clearly differnt gear ratios will effect it, but it could be allowed for in the VSS or the ECU.

But so far the only thing my car seems to be good for is smoking up the cheapo bridgestones on the front.
