RPM's too high!

Hey guys, i goit another one for you!

While driving at 80 mph, my tach is sitting a 4000 rpm, i know this is too high, so im trying to find out why its doing this.

Also, if i am oulling up to a red light and i throw it in neutral, it stays at 3000 rpm for about 3 seconnds, then drops down to 1000 where it should be.

I have previously owned 3 civic, an accord, an integra, and a legend, so i know this isnt normal, but dont really know where to start.

Any help would be greatly appriciated,
Tim

Yeah mine is at 4k at 80 mph too. I bet it kills gas mileage. This car probably has a 1:1 5th gear ratio. Sure makes passing on the freeway easy tho....

80mph = 4k RPM

throttle body is what ur intake tube is connected to

so how do you lower the RPMs at 80? could you swap in a diff. 5th gear or something? Is it bad for the car to be revving that high?

wat he said

To lower the rpm's you would need a smaller 5th gear, yes. This would likely increase your gas mileage also. Downside...thousands of dollars. Unless your really know what your doing and wanna take apart your tranny. I wouldn't say that it is bad for the car though. Hondas are built to take it. Just don't drive 120 for 5 hours. I drive steady 80 all the time and i have 151,000 miles on mine.

i guess thats on 3rd or 4th gen. ludes right? cuz i have a 2nd gen (i think, its an 85) and i go 80mph@3500 rpms, does this mean theres something wrong with my lude or just a technical/mechanical difference?

I don't know much about the 2nd gen's, but im sure its just a difference in gearing. you'll have to compare to other 2nd gen owners. theres a possibility that your tach or speedometer could be slightly off.

This just sounds normal to me.. You probably have a lower redline and/or taller gearing.

I have a '95 Prelude and I'm at 4k @ 80 too. It drives me nuts and I know it could get way better mileage if it was lower. But you're right...it does make passing on the freeway quick and easy.

i have a 96 lude its an S and i hit 3.5k rpm at 80 mph so i asked my friend about it...and its perfectly normal since i have a sohc and have a lower redline hodna made it so that my car or sohcs in general have different ratios so its logical that i am at a lower rpm level than you guys with dohcs and vtecs since your engine was built to withstand more pressure and higher redlines.

Yeah, I find that driving 80, 4k rpm on the freeway gives bad mileage compared to going 70, 3.5k rpm. I think they set 65 mph, 3.0k rpm as the speed limit for that reason, less accidents and reduced pollution.
