Critical ABS problem -risk life
My daughter owns Chevrolet car type Aveo ls .
The car production year 2008 ,
This car treated\serviced ONLY in GM authorized garage and stand all the
services needed by time\distance,
Last week the car enter (the same garage we receive the service for last 4
years) for "big treatment service" =10,000 K"M
the care did not face any problems before the service and no warning lights
.
The service included : brakes,timing chain,oil,filters ........... and cost
over 650us$
The car was picked up same day and after few days less then 40 k"m driving (25 miles) -the
car went of control during driving at a speed of 50 kmh (34mph) and the
breaks did not function the car engine noises loud and the car shudder
performance ,
the car was stopped only by hitting other car (accident) ,
lucky with no body hurt only car"s damage .
we called the garage and were asked to bring the car -that what we have done
, after half day of connecting to computer and driving the car by the garage workers,
We were advised to come and receive the car back "everything is ok -the car
is safe for driving " !
The day after during driving the car -the same event happened -the car lost
again its brakes !!!! once again we were lucky with no harm to anyone.
Again we contacted the garage and were told NOT TO TOUCH the car , the
garage people will come to pick up the car.
The car was picked up -and after over 5 days of testing -no indication was
found ,
We were told that the problem in the car is "ABS SYSTEM PROBLEM" -SAME
PROBLEM WHICH APPEARS IN RECALL OF ALL CHEVROLET CARS
YEARS 2007-2010 " !
We asked the garage to fix it immediately - the garage owner contacted UMI (GM OWNER IN ISRAEL)
and advised on the problem and asked the approval to replace the ABS system
with no charge , but was refused !!!
UMI office advised that eventhough the problem is same problem as the recall
subject , the car year (2008) was not included in the recall list
(2009-2010),
That is opposite to the garage owner advise that its the same ABS SYSTEM
PROBLEM as the recall reason !
When we asked the garage to let us have written document of the ABS system
problem -we were refused !
When we asked the garage to let us written document that the car safe
driving -we were refused !
The garage owner told us he was instructed by UMI not to give any written
information -BUT WARNS US NOT TO DRIVE THE CAR!
We are lost now -the car "stuck" in the garage, we can not drive it from
safety reasons or sale it ,
We are asked to pay over 1,800$ on our account to replace the ABS system
although its original system problem.
We wish to learn if anyone with same car Aveo ls year 2008 -faced\face same problem ?

I don't have any experience with the vehicle you mention, but I wanted to suggest not only gathering info "on what to do next" or "others who have encountered this dilemma".... but to also inquire about getting a lawyer. Consulting lawfirms, getting reviews of firms, and looking into the litigation route. It doesn't sound like anyone is willing to help, meanwhile you are out cash & a vehicle. That's just my added input. Good luck with everything...

I have a bit more understanding of your position now. Awful one. I don't know how your area is, as in, how many Chevy dealers you have, or how many independent "reputable" shops you have. One possible route to take in gathering information, is to tow the vehicle to another Chevy dealer and have them inspect the prior work. Or towing to another independent shop, for a similar review.
As a technician, we are supposed to test drive the vehicle after certain work has been done, such as brakes or suspension, in order to confirm the repair or verify that there are no other issues after. Did the dealer do this? Is this a common practise there? These are some questions to ask. The second and third evaluations will also help document your case/problem. The 2nd & 3rd evaluations of the vehicle should have detailed informartion on what their opinion of the issue is and to also include some sort of explanation or proof as to why they concluded to said problem.
I hope you are able to gather all the information needed to be able to proceed and take the best route possible.

The Aveo was possibly one of Chevrolet' s biggest mistakes. The materials used to build it were cheap and flimsy. You may have noticed when you bought it that it was a cheap car... the price was low for a reason. The ABS was just one on a long list of problems people find with the Aveo. It also had that ignition switch problem that plagued so many GM vehicles, electrical problems, and sometimes even bits of the flimsy interior trim would break or fall off. The best thing to do with a Chevy Aveo is get rid of it. Even if you get the ABS issue fixed, something else will go wrong over and over again.

if the vehicle was sold before the GM bankruptcy GM stated it is not responsible because , the old GM is dead.
the vehicle being 8 yrs old is past any warranty. you are resonsible.
GM does have ABS failures on most all of the vehicles they have produced. the controlling systems are of a defective design and in the wrong locations with brake lines that corrode .
No way is GM going to pay for this repair. though my guess is that repair shop did damage something when they worked on it . perhaps a electrical connector or a ground .
what happened exactly when the brakes failed ? examples PEDAL TO FLOOR / PEDAL PULSATING / HARD PEDAL WILL NOT DEPRESS / PEDAL GOES TO FLOOR AND WILL NOT COME BACK UP TO NORMAL ?

ok so now we all know that this is a master cylinder issue. what I would do is replace the complete master cylinder assy .
what has been reported is the master cylinder on some of these vehicles is not the proper length and a tech at a fleet service repair shop posted this is why this happens but intermittent .
another cause would be contaminated brake fluid. remember brake fluid must be pure DOT 3 never use some other container always use the brake fluid container do not pour in in some other ... petroleum oils / mineral oils will damage the master cylinder and other brake components.
I use alcohol when I work the brake system for cleaning .
the ABS failing would cause a pulsing brake pedal . this is another GM failure caused by speed sensors that are made out of cheap chinese plastic crap. also mounted on steel that rusts heavily.most ABS failures occur at speeds below 10 mph.
sounds very bad -if the GM knew\knows the ABS in the cars they sell\sold is "life risk" and avoid it !
As per your question : the breaks pedal just failed to floor , and after the engine was shut down and re started all came to "normal" and the pedal function normally,

ok so now we all know that this is a master cylinder issue. what I would do is replace the complete master cylinder assy .
what has been reported is the master cylinder on some of these vehicles is not the proper length and a tech at a fleet service repair shop posted this is why this happens but intermittent .
