I have a 1964 impala that I swapped out the drive train out of a 1992 1500 chevy truck. so I have the 350 with tbi and 700r4 trans. my problem is that it will not start unless primed but once I prime it it runs perfect. I can drive it around fine and it idles fine but once I turn it off it will not start. cranks fastbut no start. I can hear the pump going and when it starts cranking I can hear the pump stop. but it starts pumping agin while the car is running. so far ive replaced the fuel filter and completely rebuilt the throttle body.. while the body deff did need rebuild it still doing the same thing. is there something that is supposed to splash fuel into the body when start??? help a rider out please:runaround:

I would install a test pressure gauge. The fuel pump has a check valve which could be leaking bleeding all the pressure out of the system. http://www.tooltopia.com/ sells a 5/16 inline check valve with two crimp washers for connection if you don't want to replace the fuel pump.
search check valve they have both a 3/8 and 5/16

so I figured something out. the pump would run while in the on position but would stop pumping when I cranked it but as soon as the key is backed off the crank position the pump kiks back on.so now I changes the location of the power supply to be constant while key is on and while cranking it and she starts now. not idle very good now tho. I found my fuel pump relay and when I unplug it the car still runs. dosent realy change much. am I bypassing the relay and not aware? is this bad and how to I test or fix it?
also on another note my brake light fuse blows every time I start the car. all the brakes work fine while in the on position and the fuse stays good while cranking but as soon as it fires up the fues pops. any ideas on ware to start and could the two issues be related?

Did the brake light problem start after you rewired the fuel pump? Look around the brake pedal for a bare wire. Look for a bar wire close to the tail lights.
After the car is shut off for a 1/2 hour or more use a wrench and loosen the fuel line going to the throttle body. Does gas come out under pressure. Put rags under the fitting.
I'll look when I go out to my garage today for a wiring diagram.

OK SO AT BREAK I WENT AN PIDDLED AROUND WITH IT.. got the brake lights to stay on. I think a bare wire under dash was my problem. so now everything is working but it still idles rough and when I remove the fuel pump relay fuse 5 prong black deal it does nothing. still runs the same. I have a wire that goes to the fuse box that powers my fuel pump (i no this b/c I can hear it kik on)but am starting to wonder if this is a bypass wire and I am hard wireing the pump and bypassing the relay. how can I test this? when a test light is put on the relay plug with black deal removed one prong is hot with the key in the on position. when I plug in the relay and leave enough room to test the prongs 3 or 4 are hot once the relay is pluged in so I assume its at least tryn to do what its supposed to.. help... :runaround:

Bingo..... thanks a ton man. I just ran my wire that I had going to my fuse box and moved it to number 87 on my relay. Bam. Now the pump primes real quick and stops. Then when I crank it it cranks right up and is idle real nice. Even cold it's running smooth without me having to keep on gas to keep from stal. Thank you sir. Hope I can help out one day.......:iceslolan
