Are the rpms high in every gear? Does the transmission shutter or clunk when it does shift?

yes high in every gear trumps when shifting Just a thought could it be a fuse

It wouldn't be a fuse. Best case scenario is that it's the speed sensor, or the computer needs re-programmed.. but more than likely the trans is bad if you have trouble consistently in every gear, and it physically makes a sound when it shifts.

With limited information it's hard to say exactly what it could be. Fords around that year were infamous for consistent trans issues. A lot had a defect in the case, and had issues with the driver's side short shaft.

thanks for the info I forgot to tell you the check engine light came on when the problem started

Have the check engine light code checked.. that will usually point you in the right direction.

How many miles are on the car? Did you check the transmission fluid for quantity and take a whiff? Does it smell burnt? Based on the limited info available, I'm leaning towards low fluid or transmission failure.

Its my daughters car I was going on info she was giving me I drove it today There is 103K miles the transmission is shifting ok But it is not going into or out of the overdrive I got it to function a couple of times then it would do it no more. I also did a check engine test and the co sensor is bad I have not installed a new one yet I guess what we are looking for is why it is not shifting into and out of overdrive
