Can anyone give me a starting point thought I could manage but my technical experiance is limited, the problem is my son and I purchased a 88 trans am from wyoming the original motor was a V6 ,the motor installed is out of a vette 5.7 tpi the guy that installed this bypassed the cooling system the fan is tied into the fuel relay which runs continuessly, the fuel pump has been bypassed also it is missing the air pump which is needed where we live, I just need to now what to do go back to a carb are use a painless harness the one in place has been butchered, I would not no where to start as far as the computer I took it to a shop and they recommended that it would be to expensive to fix 3000.00+ that it would need a new harness and computer ,they said it was running off the V6 computer and the fuel pump being bypassed it was dumping fuel into the injectors, it is a beautiful car and there will never be another pontiac made, I believe we can fix it, just need some help from someone with experiance in laymen terms my dad taught me the basics and I do miss the carbs computer skills not so good.

Welcome

To Start, even if you switch to a carb, if your state emission require the system with "factory" controls, you'll still need the smog pump, diverter vales, air injection manifolds and factory cat with the air injection input tube. :sorry:

On the ECM, if memory serves, the same was used for V6 and V8 applications? I'd imagine the only difference is you'd need a different prom. :dunno: it's been a while. If the ECM is inop at the moment, I take it the car is running off the spark control module, which is probably very rough and rich idling.

OK, if you want to return the car to factory presentation, the best suggestion I have is Hawk's 3rd Gen. It'll get pricey no doubt, but last time I looked, they had stock wiring harnesses and quite a bit of "new" old stock parts. The 5.7 350 from the vette is still the same 350 TPI GM L98 used in the Camaro/Firebird.

I do recommend for the air injection exhaust manifolds, Edlebrock's TES headers. Had them on my 85 Z and MAN, what a difference in low end power and a cleaner exhaust tone to boot.

heh, if you can hold out a few months, my '87 GTA no longer requires testing/inspection and I plan on pulling the system..

For the fan.....This is a common backyard "mechanic" fix. What's really weird is that if the ECM is INOP, the fan shoud run at all times anyway? Folks seem to not notice, there is a temp sending UNIT for the dummy light/gauge reading on the dash located on the drivers side of the engine block between cyls 1 and 3. There is a fan SWTICH on the passenger side of the block between cyls 6 and 8 [not o be confused with the knock sensor that look JUST like it not too far away down the by cylinder 6. And there is a coolant temp SENSOR on the front of the engine just under the water neck.

Hope that gets you started.
