Does anyone know the correct procedure for tensioning and timing the belt on this car.

Cheers

'01? The tensioner has a pointer that you need align. There is a 6mm allen hole to tighten it with, then lock with the 13mm nut. Some tensioners have two small holes & require a special tool.

Thanks for that, the car is a 2001 2.0 litre petrol, european market. The reason i asked the question is that if you turn the engine backwards slightly, the belt becomes looser than i would expect as it's only a slight spring pressure. I'm more used to the older solid fitting like you get on older cars.

Have you ever heard of a slight air leak type of noise when the throttle is blipped slightly, almost as if there is a pipe off somewhere. It had a clutch replaced at an independant workshop and I wonder if they could have damaged something. It also seems a bit flat on acceleration, not very torquey if you know what i mean.

Any help with these problems would be great. PS I have given it a service, 60,000 miles inc new plugs, belt, air filter, oil filter etc. I am an ex pro mechanic.

That tensioner design is a bit scary, I like the older ones also. The rubber vacuum hoses on our US market cars were poor quality, it's very common to have them collapse, crack & perforate.

Thanks for that, I've just done a check of the engine module after previously clearing the codes, I get the following:

16804 - Catalyst System: Bank 1: Efficiency Below Threshold

P0420 - 35-00 - -

If you could give me the benefit of your knowledge on this one, I'd be grateful. After that, I think the car is sound.

Unfortunately you cat is probably on it's way out. Sometimes you can clear it & it will stay off for a while (& pass inspection). If you can view the datastream it would be good to check that both of the O2 sensors are active.

I'll check the data tonight, I did check the lambda and found a dodgy reading on that. I must check the connections first and see what happens. Thanks for your advice. A cat is £600!
