My ZX2 shuts off when i start to go!!
Hey, im new to this..i have a 2001 for escort zx2. it has been competely rebuilt motor and def. fuel system over haul..all the parts on the car can be read on this web site... http://www.cardomain.com/ride/250014...eensboro-nc-us The car has been running fine but lately...i have been going down the highway and the car will shut off...Now its getting worse and worse..It will shut off as soon as i take off or it seems to do it when i put it under load... Also, while the car is sitting there idleing, it will rev on its own to like 2000 or 3000rpms. I replaced the Throttle postion Sensor, cam sensor, crank sensor and i replaced the IAC valve(which is what i thought it was) Im so upset about this car because i have so much money into it an take care of it and it just seems to just throw up on me.. Let me mention that the fuel system is fuel cell inthe trunk, external fuel pump, fuel reg, 630 injects, and obx rail...it has never givin me any problems and i have fuel pressure gauge, oil, and boost all working fine...
Again... I start to go and it will shut off..the fuel pump is on a switch so when the car shuts off the pump is still running...Turn the key off and back on and the car fires back up.... Now, if i rev the car high and take off like im racing...she runs good..but regular starting to go(like from a stop sign or somthing) she will shut off.. If im racing down the highway, she runs awesome....but if i just regular drive down the highway, she will shut off.. Someone please help..im pretty good at this stuff but im just stumped... Thankyou alot any thoughts will help.. |

Re: My ZX2 shuts off when i start to go!!
Welcome to the forum!
I'm thinking it is either an ignition problem intermittent or a vacuum leak. A major vacuum leak would make it stumble and stall and would make it worse being under a load. Does it have a PCV system? I'm also thinking about the vacuum boosted brake servo, although it would make the engine die whenever the brake was pressed. I once had a similar problem. It turned out that a primary ignition wire was grounding out under a light load. When I would put my foot into it the added torque would give the wire enough room to not ground out. Oh. I checked out your web site. You must be a master mechanic to be able to build up your car the way you have. In contrast, I probably don't know as much as you do, but I still wish I could help. I know where you're coming from. When she runs good your day is perfect, but when she runs bad, untold misery. I still am leaning towards an ignition problem with a frayed wire or a major vacuum leak that wouldn't show up when the engine was under boost. I'm sure you could teach me a few things, so I"m reluctant to give you any advice. Best of luck to you. Don't give up. The answer will come in it's own good time. |

Re: My ZX2 shuts off when i start to go!!
Thankyou for thoughts...
I was thinking a ignition problem also, but i dont know how to go about checking that..I do not(i dont think) have a pcv system...the one on the front of the motor just runs under the car to vent out. The top of the valve cover is hooked to the oil catch can which is hooked to the turbo inlet...i cant see it being the boost brake servo because like you said the car would shut off when the brake is pressed and it does not do that..(ive never heard of a Boost break servo..lol) Let me mention that this car was a automatic that i bought years ago. I have switched it to a 5 speed and all the wires i didnt use i left alone and just zip tied up..WELL the other week i was just cleaning up the engine bay and snipped some wires that were not connected to anything...The reason im saying this is because you remined me by saying (daveescort)" I still am leaning towards an ignition problem with a frayed wire "..Im not sure this would do anything because the car ran fine for a couple weeks until it started giving me trouble.. Please give me any advice you can to help..I am currently going to school as an automotive tech, and im working on my ASE...So i can understand alot of what you are saying..and can test it out..but i dont know everything.. I do believe that i can rule out a vaccum leak, but you know how automotive crap is...I wouldnt doubt it if it was..I try really hard to keep no vaccum leaks because i love boost but you never know..Ill check those wires.. The funny thing is, i replaced all those sensors and cleared the codes in the computer..as soon as i start the car..all the sensor codes come back..(faulty crank, cam and throttle postion sensor.) i dont get it.. Again thankyou so much for your help..and any more thoughts i would love to hear..thanks |

Re: My ZX2 shuts off when i start to go!!
I'm back. How's it going? I'm still leaning towards a vacuum leak on the intake manifold. The gaskets on the plenum for a zx2 have been known to leak. That is the 1st thing to check when you have stalling. I believe in checking the simple things first. You don't have any loose or broken vacuum lines on the engine? You have mentioned that it will idle fast to 2 to 3k. This makes me think you have a vacuum leak. The IAC allows extra air into the engine to compensate for a load at idle. A vacuum leak at the manifold would do they same thing. You can check it by starting her up and spraying around the intake manifold with some carb cleaner. If the sound of the engine changes you will know you have found the problem. First, you could tighten up the fittings on the manifold and if that didn't work you could put on a new gasket. I'm wondering if all that boost has caused the gasket to blow out? Another thing could be that the head gasket is blown. I would rule that out if you have no coolant in the oil or vice versa. Sometimes when I am trying to troubleshoot my own engine I tend to have a preconceived notion of what it is. This works against me because I am not staying open to the different possibilities. So I would just get into the engine bay and start looking for anything abnormal. You could take it to the Ford dealer. It would probably freak them out lol. Stay after it and the solution will pop into your mind.
I kind of wish other people would post on this problem, but there isn't much acitivity on the zx2 forum. Good luck. Dave |
