Help me compare towable 4-down 4x4's please
My DW and I are seeking a 4x4 that can be towed 4-down behind our RV. Our RV is rated to tow 5000#'s but it is 22 years old so we want to keep the weight as far below that as possible and still have a nice enough 4X4. We also want to keep the price at or below $5000 because we still have to install about $2000 of towing and braking equipment. So, we're seeking a dinghy/toad/towable/4-down in which we will feel comfortable driving away from the campsite but still will keep us out of minor trouble in off-road situations like some of the roads in death valley, big bend of Texas, etc. AND it needs to seat 5. That puts the Wrangler right out of the mix up front.
Until yesterday I was convinced that the Jeep Liberty would fit that bill. UTube videos showed an acceptable performance, the weight is around 4000 pounds and the used price for 10 years old is about $5000 which is at the top of our price range. HOWEVER, the Libertys in that price range - that is to say those before 2007 - are poorly thought out, the whole thing seems to be made of cheep, thin plastic. Now, my DW and I have moved on to consider from a dozen alternatives used from 2000 to 2009. If you have any opinions, good or bad, on any of these, please respond. These are from Motorhome Magazine's Dinghy list. It's not exhaustive but a lot of information to sift through: Make, Model, Auto/Manual, Years listed, weight, restrictions Honda Pilot 4x4 Automatic listed 2003 - 2005 only: Lx - 4416#, EX - 4439# 65 mph limit and idle engine 3 min prior to trip and again every 8 hours of trip Nissan Pathfinder 4X4 Manual listed 2000 - 2004 only: 3975# 60 mph limit and idle engine for 5 minutes every 200 miles (from here on written thus: 60/200) Nissan Xterra 4X4 Manual: wei'ght climbs from 3504# to 4360# from '00 to '09 60/200 Jeep Cherokee 4X4 Manual or Automatic listed 2000 - 2001 only: 3181# No restrictions listed Jeep Grand Cherokee 4X4 Manual or Automatic : weight climbs from 3955# in 2000 to 4640# in 2009 No restrictions listed Jeep Patriot 4X4 Manual listed 2009 only: 3310# No restrictions listed Kia Sportage 4X4 Manual listed 2000 - 2003 only: 3350# 55/400 Kia Sorento 4X4 Manual listed 2004 - 2006 only: 4340# 55/400 Toyota Rav4 Manual listed 2002 - 2006 only: climbs from 2877# in 2002 to 3119# in 2006 55/400 Suzuki Grand Vitara 4X4 auto or manual: climbs from 3064# in 2000 to 3611 in 2009 (2008 and 2009 do not specify that it is still a 4X4 vehicle) 55/200 Suzuki Vitara 4X4 auto or manual listed 2002 - 2006 only: climbs from 2601# in 2000 to 2809# in 2006 55/200 Suzuki XL-7 4X4 listed as automatic, listed 2002 - 2006 only: climbs from 3682# in 2002 to 3759 in 2006 55/200 Thank you |
