2000 chevy tracker egr code

I have a 2000 chevy tracker 2.0 engine. Since I bought it several months ago it has smelled like gasoline when I push the engine to about 1500rpm and especially going up any hills. I had a code for the egr come up recently, so I replaced the egr valve and valve gasket. This helped for about ten minutes and then went back to normal. I was losing power and the gas smell is worse than ever! I checked everything again and nothing looked wrong with the part or installation. Then my engine light came back on the very next day saying the egr valve needs to be replaced. Given it is brand new and looks completely fine, I don't know what is wrong. Any idea would be highly appreciated!!!

Hey!!

You say this smell is noticeable under load. Check to make sure you do not have a leaking Fuel Injector! Best way to appraise this.... shut hot engine down after trip and open hood. Listen for any hissing and obviously if there is any gas smell under the hood. Locate the issue. You may have to be in a garage if the surrounding area is noisy. A leaking fuel injector is a fire risk big time!!! Injector "O" rings harden up with age. Could be...on an older car.
