I went to Flint Hills Tech in Emporia Kansas for a year. It was a good course and they helped me to get into a dealership. I ended up moving into an open position in the parts department though.


I guess the moral of the story is you won't learn a great deal about working on cars at school but it may give you an open door into a dealership to begin your career and decide where you want to go from there. The best way to learn to work on cars is find your groove whether it is heavyline, suspensions, driveability, or drivetrains, and learn all you can about it. Most dealers have specialized techs and the dealer will provide the training for specific areas of the car.

go to a tech school that is ase. i think it s called.

UTI is a good school. I just went to a local Tech school though. Auto Tech is a good job. But you have to be good and fast. Most do flat rate pay. I decided to not finish auto tech and am doing Collision Tech instead

Get into a dealership ASAP. The will help train you and flat rate can be your friend if you are good at your job.

If you want to work in a dealership, get a job there changing oil & tires. Most places will send you threw schooling & pay for it. Wyo tech. is a great school UTI isn't bad either.

i am currently attending community college to recieve a AAS in automotive performance technology. it will take me a year and a half to complete. i chose this school over a tech school because the tech school would cost around 30K and you dont even get a degree. at a Community college, it will only cost around 5K, plus if i decide i dont like it as a career, the AAS will transfer to a university for certain bachler degrees ( like mechanical engeneering). a community college gives just as good an education, if not better(beucase i have known people who have gone to UTI and dont know S***). because its cheaper you can spend the 20K you save on your own toold your gonna need when you get done, plus most major tool makers give students 50% off regardless of what kind of school you go to. tech schools cost alot more so thats why you always see commercials on TV for them, that doesn't mean they are better, so check your community colleges about an automotive program.

ii forgot to say that alot of the community colleges have a apprenticeship programa with dealerships. tech schools promise you jobs, and alot of the students end up doing oil changes at pep boys. and thats all their 30k got them.

Stop by your local dealerships and talk to the service manager.
Ask about appreniceship programs and training. Some auto makers offer college/work training programs.
Spend some time learning and understanding electrical and electronic theory and operation!
Most all automotive systems are electronically controlled and a tech who can understand,diagnos and repair these problems are in high demand.

Anyone can change tires and oil.........a tech who can diagnos and repair an intermittant class 2 data problem is like gold!
