Countless times (actually 7) on my '98 LS. In fact, it's going right now. The problem is the ignition lock cylinder. On mine (which has acted up 3 times in the past 3 weeks), if I insert the key just a tad too fast, on goes the "Theft System" light and then it won't start for 15-20 mins. VERY annoying.

From other web sites, I'm guessing that the '04 lock cylinder is bad too. GM is a mess.

it is the ignition cylinder, or rather the sensor inside the ignition cylinder. i work at the dealer and i see this so much that if i bring in a malibu with a security light i dont even attempt to diagnose the problem, i just give them an estimate on replacing the ignition cylinder, it alway fixes it and they dont come back.

If you didn't catch this in another thread, the combination of the lock cylinder going for the 8th time and the trannie starting to make a metallic sound, and the GMPP set to expire, and the $4,000 Owner Loyalty Bonus which started in early June, sent me over the top. I now have an '04 Maxx LS. I went for an Accord first, but the treatment I received was worse than awful.

Ignition lock cylinders on the '04s actually seem OK. Person who complained (on another web site) actually meant trouble with the remote keyless, not the lock cylinder.

I'm having a few minor issues with the '04, but nothing even reportable to J D Power, yet anyway.

It's a dealer only item. Actually it isn't the lock itself but the decoder that attaches to it.

I have a 2000 Malibu and it has had the same problem. The dealer said that it was possibly a broken wire in the door and wanted $400 dollars to put a new wiring harness in it. I took the door apart and wiggled the wires and that seemed to fix the problem for now. This has only happened one time, and hopefully with all the other problems the car is having, it will be the only time.
