help please. 84 yota fuel problems
i have a 84 4x4 toyota. Can't keep it running. It runs when i manauly pour gas into the carb, dies after 10-15 secs of running after turned over with no gas poured down into the carb. When it dies it sounds like it runs out of gas. Past owner said they replaced the gas pump recently and it does look new. a small flow of gas is viewable though the fuel filter. I was thinkin of addin a aftermarket electirc pump with toggle switch but i rather not have the trouble of turning on and off the pump. any ideas?

Re: help please. 84 yota fuel problems
1. In the front of the carb (under the air cleaner) is a sight glass for the carb's fuel level.
The fuel level should be about center. 2. Pull the fuel pump hose off at the carb, stick the end into a small container, then crank the engine a sec or 2. Does it dribble out or constant stream?

When i pull the hose off and turn it over a steady flow comes outs for a short time. However it dripples out after that short time of steady flow.

yes i prime the carb and have someone turn the truck over. at first it pumps a good flow of fuel than it decreases greatly.

Re: help please. 84 yota fuel problems
Could be fuel pump, filter, clogged sock (filter) on the in-tank pickup.
FWIW, I've found used Toyota mechanical pumps are better than new aftermarket ones.

Re: help please. 84 yota fuel problems
The pump up on the engine is new, so i dont think thats the problem. i pulled the stock filter off and blow though it. it wasnt clogged, but i still left it off seeing how i have that aftermarket filter up but the engine. i dont think its a clog in the drop line in the tank as well. the tank is out of a friends toyota what was recently running like a champ but had a incounter with a ditch and rock wall so now is totaled. As you can see im very confused as to why the fuel isnt being pump out of the tank. I will take your advice on the pump and pull the workin one off the parts truck tho. any suggestions to just by pass the whole thing and get fuel to the carb?

Re: help please. 84 yota fuel problems
You could try an aftermarket inline electric pump, they're pretty cheap.

Have you ever had used a straw with a hole in it. when you get to the hole, the straw doesn't work... the point is there may be a leak in your fuel lines. check out your lines... in those trucks, even the smallest crack in a rubber lines causes the issue that you describe...
