Re: Persistant Clunking
Most likely suspect to me would be body mounts. They have been known to cause clunking if bad or loose. Next I would susupect rear spring bushings. Its a start.

Re: Persistant Clunking
Where is the jack & tire iron stuff on the 1997's? I know it sounds silly, but I've seen (and had) jack handles flop around and cause the issue you describe.

Check if your exhaust pipe is hitting your axle.

Re: Persistant Clunking
i checked the clearance for the exhaust and its just fine...i took it to my dads shop and he seems to think its both the bushings and the body mounts so ill change out the leaf springs and body mounts and get back to you on it

Re: Persistant Clunking
It's probably your leaf spring bushings. I have a 95, same thing, thought it was wheel bearing, changed it, what a job that was... made no difference. Noticed leaf spring was not sitting even. Found that Napa sold the lower bushings, must have been common failure. Took the old ones out, they were shot. Put new ones in, problem solved. I have 206,000 miles.
