What exactly can pull the tranny out of gear?
So my wife is driving down the road and she says that when she is in 4th randomly it will pop out of gear, she said that it happened to her only a couple of times last night and tonight. I took it for a drive and I found that she is indeed not lying and that it is popping out of gear. I noticed that when it does pop out of gear it seems like it is being pulled out not just slipping out. Could a bad motor mount cause this when pulled against the shift handle? Can a bad linkage from the shifter do what is happening? IF either of these can help if they are fixed then let me know if not then what do I need to do.

Re: What exactly can pull the tranny out of gear?
It's most likely a loose retaining nut in the tranny. It usually happens in 5th gear but I don't see a reason why it wouldn't happen in other gears. BEWARE, this is an indication of a critical transmission problem. It begins with shifter movement, and progreses to what you've described. In your case, the retaining nut may come completely loose blasting a hole in the transmission case SOONER then later. Follow this link, it provides more info on this topic http://members.shaw.ca/costall/1000Q...myshiftermoves

Ok so I read up on that site and found out that he believes that only 5th has this problem not all the gears or even 4th so...I have another question to add to this one. Are all the gears on one "spindle" or are they on 2 of them cause for some reason I always thought that 1,3 and 5 were on one spindle and 2,4, and R were on there own spindle please correct me if I'm wrong cause this is what I have always thought. Also heres a thought if they are all on the same spindle then could the nut still be loose on 5th but not be affecting 5th but the next gear beside it?
Also could I have bad bearings in the tranny that would do this? |

Possible reasons for a manual trans. slipping out of gear:
1. Worn or improperly adjusted linkage. 2. Transaxle loose on engine. 3. Shift linkage does not work freely, or binds. 4. Input gear bearing retainer broken or loose. 5. Dirt between clutch cover and engine housing. 6. Worn shift fork. Good Luck

Re: What exactly can pull the tranny out of gear?
have everything checked out as loeman listed. though those are general problems with any gear, 4th gear would usually be #1 or #4. Check for freeplay with the linkage. Also if the shifter can move any other direction than up in 4th (it shouldnt be able to move left or right more than about 1/8th of an inch), it is a sign that the problem may just be the linkage.

Ok so earlier this evening my car popped out of 5th. So my question is could that nut really be my problem if that one website said that only 5th had this problem? Tomorrow I am going to take off that end cap of the tranny and take a look at that nut and see if it is in A Ok shape cause if the tranny is really shot then I'm going to drive the car till the tranny dies and then I'm getting a car more family oriented.

Re: What exactly can pull the tranny out of gear?
its not fast in comparison to all cars but with cars in the same category, its one of the faster stock 2.0s out there, plus it was the fastest car ive owned at the time. it is also a stick so that made it a little faster too. Its been clocked from 0-60 in 7.2 seconds which is still quite fast for such a small engine.

Mine used to pop out of 4th gear also. I found out that my linkage bushing was worn to an oval and because of that it wasn't getting put into gear all the way. Thus it led to many internal problems which led to the death of my tranny. If its too late for your tranny, then you could just get a Shepherd tranny...

Re: What exactly can pull the tranny out of gear?
So shes gone, I traded in my 92 Talon for a 98 Ford Explodure today and I almost cried when I took my last look at her. So depressing. But I had to get something more family oriented.
