Codes 171/174 Returned after TSB fix - Windstar stalls when hot

Please help.

While driving home from vacation, 2000 Windstar lost power and stalled. Codes 171/174 led mechanic to change valve gaskets, etc. according to TSB ($695 including tow). Drove 80 miles with a/c and van lost power and stalled again. Let sit a few hours and drove home without a/c.

Had check engine light checked at Autozone and codes 171/174/401 appeared. Brother-in-law changed the EGR valve and DPFE (another $125).

Drove for 1 hour around town today with a/c and van lost power and stalled , same as before. Let sit for a few hours and drove to autozone. Codes 171/174 have returned. Van seems to have an airy sound on the passenger side.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Kaytibug,

Sounds like you (or your mechanic) left the vaccum line off on the passanger side. There are at least two (one being a double). You may need to take the plemun off to check. That would be the airy or hissing sound your hearing. If you get that on, it should run better, but not sure if that will clear the P0171 and P0174 codes. It's possible that the procedure to clear the codes originally wasn't done correctly.

I agree. Something was missed when the procedure was done. Maybe the gaskets were replaced, but not the bolts ... a fatal error. Or perhaps a hose left unconnected.

Whatever, your repairman should now step up and be responsible.

Re: Codes 171/174 Returned after TSB fix - Windstar stalls when hot

I have same issue with 2001 windstar for 4 months now. After city driving for 30 minutes, stop the car and it won't start up for about 15 minutes. Can't hear the fuelpump whiniing sound. It starts ok after 15 minutes of cooling.

I have changed all relays ( PCM and fuelpump relay also ) changed fuel filter, also fixed the p0171/174 ( isolator bolts replacement ) on this windstar. But the stalling problem remains.

lately i found a TSB 97-24-22 for windstar stalling problem. It basically says to replace the power distribution box as moisture in it shuts off the fuelpump relay ( cost about $ 120 )

My windstar is with the dealer today to see if they can replicate the problem. Did anyone find a solution yet ?

Sound like the TSB above may be the issue. One thing to look at is your Key. When you try to crank it does your Anti theft light blink faster than normal. That the only other thing I can think of.

Update - You guys were correct, the Upper Intake Gasket and Isolator Bolts were again the issue. Apparently, there was a hairline fracture somewhere so the repair shop did change it out for me. Thank you!

Something is still not quite right. Van will sometimes hesitate while driving. I am going to try running a fuel treatment through it and also have the spark plugs changed. Any other ideas?

Check your fuel pump pressure. Just went through a hesitation problem it took for ever to diagnose. Have a mechanic check and make sure your fuel pressure at key on engine off is about 35Lbs and check pressur when running and with the vacume line removed from the vacume regulator.

Have your fuel filter replaced first ( $25 ) to see if this fixes the hesitation.

Heres the update for my windstar stalling problem in hot weather.

The dealer was able to replicate the stalling problem. He found 12 volts at the fuel pump but the fuel pump would'nt turn ON.. after 15 mintues or so it started working fine.

I am therefore having the erratic fuelpump and the fuel filter replaced. Wish me luck and i will update if this really cures the problem.

Re: Codes 171/174 Returned after TSB fix - Windstar stalls when hot

Well months later we finally have a fix to the problem. As usual you guys were on the right track. We had the isolator bolts/gaskets changed again and then the manifold itself then a coil, spark plugs, fuel filter with 171/174 returning after each step, but the stalling problem did stop and was replaced with a hesitation. Finally, the fuel pump was changed and all seems to be well (for today anyway).
