08 ES350 Oil Change

Just sold my old lovable 99 Camry and got a 08 Lexus ES350.

First surprise in changing oil is that the filter is a cartridge type. Haven't seen that since my '66 Biscayne. Next surprise is that the 3.5l V6 engine takes 6.4 qts of oil.

To the point, I couldn't get the drain plug out of the filter housing. The housing came off and even with a cheater the drain plug didn't want to give up. I figured the only use of the drain plug is to keep you from getting a handful of oil when you take the housing off.

Am I wrong?

Thanks!
