Cobalt 2006: Govern/Limiter?
Hello all and thank you in advance.
The girlfriend has a 2006 Cobalt (one with cruse control, keyless entry, manual windows) and she seems to drive with a heavy foot. My concern is she is a new driver, about a year, and this car is light. Is there anyway to Govern/Limit the speed this car can travel to avoid an accident/ticket(s)? When i asked the GM Service Tech they said simply NO. But i find that hard to beleave that GM would make it that way. Thank you all for your time. PS: this car is junk, never buying gm again. issues with this car: - rmp's raising with no speed change while on cruse. - visor mirror cover snapped off (apparently there is a recal on those gm forgot to tell us) - d/s mirror turns when the door is closed 5+ times - alignment over and over it seems - oil leak (wananteed) - radio resetting audo levels when 97.5 is selected - when going slow over small bumps it sound like the plastic on the bottom of the car is banging |

-The rising RPMS while to speed change is most like the car droping out of overdrive gear, if your going up a hill, it trans will downshift to keep the car from losing speed while going up hill. It doesnt have to be a huge hill to do this either. -alignment issues are prolly related to your gfs driving habits, you said she has a led foot, high speed hard turns will throw off an alignment -oil leak was warranted -radio resetting audio levels is more than like due to whats called autovolume. The radio reads the car speeds so the faster you go the louder it gets and the slower you go the quieter it gets, this is to combat engine noise, easy to turn off. -Going over the small pumps blasitic banging is most likely the cars plastic hub caps. If you dont have actual rims on the car, but instead just steelie tires with hub caps, its very common knowledge that they dont fit well and have alot play, this causes annoying plastic slapping around on the car. There isnt any plastic really underneath your car. |

Re: Cobalt 2006: Govern/Limiter?
Thanks for the reply,
I've herd of the hardware you put on the throtal before, but yeah i still think its odd it cant be changed in the software. I have a fair amount of programming back ground with similar units to the plc's used in cars and just thought it would be a feature that would be programmed in for ease of set up Curse Control & RPM's : see the odd thing is you'd think "yup going up a hill thats normal" but this was random, flats, hills up/down, 50kmh or 100kmh didn't matter. they changed the recalled shift selecter and the problem didn't happen any more, i have no idea. started at about 6 - 7 months old Alignment: although she will do 125kmh on the HWY 401 (4 to 16 lane highway in ontario) she takes corners like a baby, you would almost set a glass of water on the dash and it not move. so again kind of odd. she also avoid pot holes and curbs and all that fun stuff. 5th alignment at 10 months old. Radio: by resetting on 97.5 it is resetting base, trebbel, volume. It will do it to the same level's on all 3 no matter if you are in park, drive, reverse or goign 10kmh , 50kmh, 100kmh. very odd. noticed at 2 months Rims: alio rims. & summer tires right now. winter they are steel & winter tires. I forgot to add to the list of problems was the 'shift selecter' you could turn the car on and drive away to your destination say 5+ minutes away, park, come back turn the car on and when you went from park over reverse (food firmly on break) it would make a ratchit/grinding sound. GM replaced it under warranty. Its starting to do it again. This was at 8 months old. I am not a mechanic or really have any experience understanding most car problems but this was brand new from the lot with 358km on it 11 months ago now. I know on this car throtal and break are all electronic so I had only hoped for a software plug in and restrict. Thanks again for your reply, I am just waking up from working 12hr nights so i am sorry for the spelling and typo errors if any or if something isn't explained well. |

Re: Cobalt 2006: Govern/Limiter?
no thats fine, the radio thing ive noticed as well. but for me it applies to the 2nd channe FM programming group. As soon as i leave the channel 2 programged channels, it goes back to flat for all my audio levels. The first one is fine though.
Other than that, sounds like you have had alot of warranty work done on the car, atleast its being covered under warranty. But sounds like you jsut got a bad build. |

Re: Cobalt 2006: Govern/Limiter?
With the right resources PCM software can be modified to 'adjust' your rev limiter and speed cut-off. Hehee.. I'm pretty sure they are fine where they are at on the delta chassis. Screw a block of wood under the go pedal for her!
