Stalling Problems: Sorry for the repeat thread
I apoligize ahead of time....I didn't have time to search all the threads to try to find an answer in laymans terms (I'm somewhat of a rookie when it comes to autorepairs...somewhat)
I have a 1991 Olds Cultlass Ciera, 3.1 liter 6 cyl engine. I needed to have the engine cradle replaced on the left side after time had destroyed it. Two problems, the first most severe. Stalling. The vehicle has a pretty serious stalling problem....but it only does it when it's either damp or cold out......never when it's warm. It will run just fine from 10 mph and up. But as soon as I remove my foot from the throttle...boom....stalls. I know I'll have a problem if I have to give it gas on start up. It does start back up almost immediately however....so I'm not sure what's happening. I had the gas tank replaced recently as well, but I didn't think that would have anything to do with it, as it was doing it before the tank was replaced. I've had to drive with both feet...one on the brake and the other on the throttle giving a little gas for a long time, and it's becoming a big nuisance. I haven't replaced material yet.....I wanted to try to pin point the problem before I start pumping money into things that don't solve it. Secondly....after having the engine cradle replaced, it seems that now I have a pretty loud squeek when pushing the throttle. It used to chirp when putting it into gear, but it has since disappeared....the transmission looks to have settled into the new position. But it sounds as if something isn't tight enough, maybe the engine mounting bolts, or something might not be sitting right on the chassis. It'll squeek when the accelerator is pushed. It's nothing crucial, just a nuisance. Any help on these topics would be very much appreciated. |

Re: Stalling Problems: Sorry for the repeat thread
Do this.
1. Locate your IAC (Idle Air Control solenoid). It is located on the throttle body and just above the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). 2. Remove the IAC, spray it with throttle body cleaner to get rid of any carbon build up and use a brush. Clean also the spot where you remove the IAC from and clean it good. 3. Put back the IAC (dry) and test the vehicle. 4. You may have to replace the IAC as they go bad over time. 5. The TPS might be failing as it tells the computer the position of the throttle plate. If the TPS is giving a voltage below the minimun voltage at IDLE then you could have a very low RPM and cause stalling problem. 6. The noise you are hearing probably is the bolt/spring on the exhaust pipe that connects to the exhaust manifold. Either replace it or put some high temp grease on the bolt/spring. I've done that and no more squeaking. 7. Search the web for "PCV Catch Can", to help your intake protect against from unwanted oil that the PCV introduces. I recommend to just put air/oil separator that is normally used for the Air Compressor. Your intake hoses, intake manifold, IAC, Throttle Plate will be free off oil that could cause it to gunked up. |
