What is a technical service bulletin (TSB)?

What's a TSB?
Technical service bulletins, or TSBs, are notices that manufacturers send to delearship service centers. They're often issued within the first year that the vehicle has been manufactured. A TSB can describe anything from a recurring defect to procedures service personnel should follow when making a repair.
What's the difference between a recall and a TSB?
If a manufacturer is responsible for a safety related defect, it's required by law to notify customers and make repairs free of charge. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) maintains a record of open safety recalls. Some vehicles of the same year, make and model may not be included in the recall.
Manufacturers are not required to issue TSBs, which generally describe less severe defects. Often, however, manufacturers issue TSBs in response to customer complaints. If the defect is widespread, manufacturers may elect to notify customers and make the repair free of charge.
What if I find a TSB related to a problem I'm having with my vehicle?
If you have a problem with your vehicle, the best place to start is with your dealer or mechanic. Describe the problem and have your vehicle inspected. If the dealer cannot find the problem, you can refer to the TSB you think may be related. Depending on circumstances, repairs may be made free of charge.
How can I obtain more detailed TSBs?
The TSBs listed on this site are provided by Edmunds.com and are obtained from NHTSA. They are a brief summary of the bulletin. For a fee, you can order the full text of the TSBs online at NHTSA.
