Need help bad!!! failed emmisions
Okay, I just bought a 92 metro hatchback.
So far did tune-up, Replaced OXY sensor replaced timing belt alternator belt oil pan gasket & a couple of leaks. I was told catylitac converter needs replacemant & I have an exhaust leak. (next on the list). Went to get car inspected and....... I failed for oxygen%: standard is 1.19, I read an 8.66, I also failed HC: standard is 212, I read 384 Question is, will the convertor cause those poor readings? And possibly poor gas mileage? I had a compression check done. And the mechanic said all was ok. 120,120,115 I am currently getting only 25 mpg but I just had the Oxy sensor changed, so I hope(PRAY) that fixes the poor gas mileage. The oxy sensor was changed before the inspection if that helps. I can't afford to spend much more on this thing. I'm up to $900 in repairs in one week since I bought it. Thanks in advance Dave (lakini) |

yes catalic converter is more than likely the cause of failed emissions. If you've got an exhaust leak, that's not helping your fuel milage. Since you'll need to replace the cat, and sooner or later change the whole exhaust I'd recommend changing it all together. You can buy a catco cat on ebay for about $40 and any muffler shop should build you a custom exhaust, you might wanna go bigger diameter size ( say 1 and 6/8 or so), better free flowing exhaust=more power and better mpg.
