1996 olds 98 whining noise

Hi,

My 1996 98 makes like a whining noise when accelerating. I hear this on some other GM 3800's. Everything works and the car runs fine any answers?

not supercharged, I think it's either the alternator or the fuel pump.

Thanks.

If the fuel pump has been replaced, then maybe (cheap fuel pumps whine louder than expensive fuel pumps). I'd guess water pump, but maybe alternator but the alt shouldn't loud enough to hear. Otherwise, a bad tensioner is possible.

You need to start the engine, use a bit of garden hose or a dowel rod and try to listen to each individual pulley as someone (or you) gooses the throttle.
