1998 Chevy Lumina stalls while driving...
Hi there. My 1998 Chevy Lumina stalls while driving. After i pull over i crank it and it gets going right away. Sometimes i drop it in neutral and restart it that way. It kinda bugs me, 'cause sometimes it doesn't do it in days, and some other times it does it 3-4 times a day. Any ideas??
Thanks . L. |

Re: 1998 Chevy Lumina stalls while driving...
I had an old lumina that did that. I think it has something to do with the Torque Converter cause a friend of mine unplugged it (very easy) and the problem never came back. Now i hear that this may not be recommended so do at your own risk but i did it at about 160,000 miles and drove it like that till i sold it at 220,000 miles.
I never found out why it did that or what the reasoning was for the torque converter making it stall but this unplug worked for me. My symptoms at the time were driving usually between 45 and 70 and then it would just stall. Like you said i would be able to go to neutral and start it right up again but it would do this intermittenly. Had no set timing to it it just happened. I recommend you pull the plug and drive like that for one or 2 weeks whatever time it will take to make sure this was and is the problem and then take it in to shop. Hope this helps. |

You really cannot disconnect the tcc this way you will loose all shift functions on a 98. I would start off by disconnecting the egr for test purposes and cleaning the throttle body and idle air control.
