I put a new ignition cylinder the key won't come out at all. I was told that the key needs to come out in order for them to code the key. How do I get the key out of the ignition?? Need help really bad.

Re: 1999 Ford Taurus ignition cylinder
To make sure we are all on the same page, is it the key cylinder that you just installed, and you cannot get the new key out of the new key cylinder? So even if you turn the key to the Off position you are not able to get the key out? Have you tried removing the new key cylinder and removing the key when it's all out of the car?
When you say "code the key" are you referring to programming the new transponder key to the PATS system? -Rod |

Re: 1999 Ford Taurus ignition cylinder
Yes ..after putting it in I can't get the ignition key out. They just said that I have to get the key coded with Ford dealership or a locksmith ..in order for the car to start. But... They said that the key has to be out of the ignition in order for them to code the key. And it's all new and can't get key out. When I bought it the ignition cylinder and key was gone. The auto part store told me I needed a ignition cylinder and key so I bought it and put it in like they told me but the car key will not come out. I tried everything together the key to come out.

Re: 1999 Ford Taurus ignition cylinder
I wonder if the ignition switch was not in the ACC position when you inserted the new key cylinder. The ignition switch is to be the in ACC position along with the key cylinder switch when it's inserted and removed. If it wasn't, the key cylinder is likely binding up and preventing you from removing the key.
Are you able to move the key to other positions? I suspect you'll need to removing the steering column trim so that you can see the lock pin under the key cylinder, move the key to the ACC position (which may take some experimentation) and depress the lock pin so that you can pull the key cylinder out, then reposition the ignition switch to the ACC position. -Rod |

Yes the key will move to the start position and in the off position and turn all the way back. I will try to remove it today. Wish me luck , I have no idea what I'm doing. Thank you!! I will post back and let you know what happens.

ACC is the first position past Off. It is Off, ACC, On/Run then the Start that will spring back to On/Run.

Re: 1999 Ford Taurus ignition cylinder
I'm glad 65Comet listed the positions since it made me realize I misspoke. You actually need to be in the Run position to remove the key cylinder switch. That's the position where all the instrument cluster warning lights perform their bulb test, etc.

Re: 1999 Ford Taurus ignition cylinder
I put it in the ACC position and still can't get the new ignition cylinder out. Don't want to tear it up to get it out because it's brand new. Not sure what to do ?

Re: 1999 Ford Taurus ignition cylinder
Do you have the steering column apart so that you can access the cylinder release tab? Do the various positions of the key seem to work properly (Off, ACC, ON/RUN, and START)? Also note that I attempted to correct myself above that you need to be in the ON/RUN position to press the detent and remove the cylinder.

Re: 1999 Ford Taurus ignition cylinder
Yes the key turns to the run/off and the ACC position. I had to put the plastic column back on in order to put the new ignition cylinder in. I tried again, putting different screwdrivers in the hole to press the button thing that sticks out inside there to take it out but it's like there is nothing to push in. I moved the screwdriver around some and it feels like flat surface in there. I watched all kinds of YouTube videos and it looks so easy but.. It's not working for me. Any more ideas on what to do??

Re: 1999 Ford Taurus ignition cylinder
Take the column shrouds back off so you can get a clear view of the release button and try depressing it in different positions of the key.
