'93 APV loosing power

I have an APV that will suddenly loose power at highway speeds. It seems like the engine is "choking". I do all my own repairs, but this has me baffled. Here are the details:

- Engine (3.1L) is well maintained, and has new plugs, wires, cap/rotor
- Lose of power is random. Might happen once a month
- Engine has never quite, and no "check engine light"
- When it happens, I usually put the van in neutral, try feathering the accelerator (which causes the engine to gag/cough), by the time I coast to a speed where I can hear the engine, it recovers and runs fine (usually by the time I hit ~25-30 MPH). I can put it in drive and continue.
- Has a new fuel pump

Thoughts???

Thanks, Bob

Re: '93 APV loosing power

That looks like fuel starvation,..."looks like..."...and since you did not mention it, just to eliminate the possibility, I'd look for a new fuel filter
....it will probably prove to no avail.....but it clears the option....
by the way, the fuel pressure is regulated around 14 psi with the 3.1 : may be the fuel regulator bypass stays open at times for some freak cause....I'd check fuel pressure..and of course, I'd really like to have some real time reading at the time the problem shows...

Re: '93 APV loosing power

This turned out to be the iginition module (in the distributor). It must have been malfunctioning when the engine got hot and was running at high rpms.

Thanks for the update. Your experience is proof again that the entire ignition set is highly unreliable at that age..
